It is (the day after) 😮‍💨 and we like to share this every year to remind people that cats can and do suffer from asthma just like humans. Olive used to have episodes of coughing due to her asthma brought on by seasonal allergens but this was one of her very last attacks almost 6 years ago. When this first started happening we thought she was trying to get out a very stubborn hairball. It happened a few times a week and slowly escalated to daily and even more than once a day.

It is important to note that coughing can be caused by other things besides asthma and it would require a vet’s diagnosis to know for sure which usually involves an exam🩺 and chest X-ray 🩻 to confirm. Coughing can also happen for spontaneously for no real reason, once in a great while, but if it becomes frequent especially increasingly frequent or for longer periods it is good to get it checked out. Then you can both breathe a bit easier! 😯😮‍💨💨

Humom Kicey here 💙 I’m endorsing Erin Petrey .petrey the progressive candidate for Congress in Kentucky’s 6th District. I believe in showing up for leaders, in ANY DISTRICT, who are working toward a more just, compassionate, and forward-looking future. The primary is just 28 days away. If you’re able, please consider supporting or sharing this post - even if you don’t live in Kentucky, because small actions can add up to meaningful change. 💙

Annual Easter PSA 🚨🚨 we say this every year and every year there are people who didn’t know, people who ignore the warning and do it anyway, and people who lost their cats to lily toxicity.

LILIES ARE TOXIC TO CATS. There is no safe exposure to any part of lilies. Because their pollen is so messy and powdery, if the flowers come in your house, there is a chance that your cat could step in some accidentally dropped pollen and groom it off their paws and need to be hospitalized. Even if you keep them up on a shelf or in a room where cats aren’t allowed. DO NOT TAKE THE RISK. Your cat’s life is not worth flowers. 🚫🌺🚫

There are no other flowers that are nearly as toxic to cats as lilies but there are plenty that could sicken your cat. There are plenty of flowering plants that are completely non-toxic to cats. Check out our car-safe plants highlight in our profile. Share this far and wide! 🚫🌺🚫

🚨FANF*CKINGTASTIC NEWS 🚨
Humom here: We haven’t posted a Rye update in a while after an extremely challenging and scary few weeks. It started with getting a new higher concentration of her compounded liquid medicine for Cushing’s. She was responding well to it and a week later we noticed that the medication had separated out and wasn’t mixing back together as it should. And we weren’t sure how long it had been doing that - which would mean she was basically getting doses of cod liver oil with no medication in it for an unknown period.

This happened on a Saturday and we called the office of her internist (which is also an emergency vet hospital) and someone there told us to mix it up manually and dose as usual. The emergency pharmacist said do the same. We did. She ended up 🤮 her second dose. Not good.

She didn’t want to eat anything but a smidgen of Churu even with Cerenia for three days. During which time we were consulting with the internist and pharmacy frantically trying to figure out what to do. They told us to not give her a dose for 24-48 hours until she starts eating again. Fortunately I remembered I had some Mirataz and she started eating again after the first dose of it.

We started giving her capsules of the name brand medicine (Vetoryl which is trilostane) which we were told has better efficacy than the compounded meds we have been giving her. We gave her liquid until we figured out what her maintenance dose should be and it just so happens that the capsules were available at her maintenance dose amount.

The first week after we changed over was a bit scary as she was having a lot of her old pre-treatment behaviors return - fur falling out, screaming for food constantly and eating everything in sight while shrinking, drinking a lot, bad 💩💩💩, low activity. By the second week she suddenly shifted away from all of that - she was playfully instigating wrestling matches with her sisters, we even had a running of the torties which we haven’t seen in probably over a year. Rye even jumped over Fig in playing, TWICE! She stopped napping propped up against her water mug so she could drink from it every time she woke up. (Continued in comments)

This little Rye, full of mysteries!

Humom here. So in the wee hours of morning I was awakened by Rye jumping out of bed and crying out like she was in pain. When I got up to see she was laying like a pancake in the middle of the floor. At first it looked like she was maybe hunting something or maybe trying to vomit - she was very low to the ground. Picking her up, she was breathing fast (but not deep chest breathing) and purring weakly. And she just seemed a bit limp in my arms. I set her back down and she waddled out of the room. When I followed her she had collapsed again in the living room and behind her was a puddle of p*e on the rug with some on her foot. I woke up catdad and when I came back she was still on the ground, low but mouth breathing with her tongue hanging out. Catdad picked her up and she still felt a bit limp to him. Then she walked herself to the litter box and dropped a big 💩.

We got ourselves together to leave for the emergency vet and I saw her mouth breathing again for a moment while she just laid low. We took her to our nearest emergency vet and they assessed her and determined she did not have any fluid around her heart or lungs or any other signs of heart failure, chest X-ray was clear. She didn’t even need supplemental oxygen.

Considering she was early pre-stage CKD when last we checked her numbers, with a high-normal thyroid along with her moderate/severe 3/4 heart murmur we were fearing the worst.

Her kidney values were back in normal range! Her thyroid was also normal! She had only a slightly elevated Potassium. Her glucose was only slightly elevated (stress). So likely not diabetes. They said they would have a cardiac workup in the morning and hold her for the rest of the night to observe. (Continued in comments, same text as slides)

We are still here 🧡🖤🧡🖤 Fig did great last week with her dental, only one extraction. The election was a very different story. Gutpunch 💔 trying to plan for how to navigate the dark days ahead, but always, thank goodness for cats. We love you 💕

We just returned home a little early from our camping trip to Maine very late last night 😴 we had a great visit, got to sit by the fire 🔥, watch chipmunks from the canopy 🐿️ look at the beautiful leaves changing 🍁🍂 take a couple of peaceful hikes and sit on some twigs 🪵 and Olive got to visit with her favorite rocks 🪨 by the ocean at in Cape Elizabeth on our way to camping in 🌊🍁 Humom and Fig met someone who was camping with her adventure tortie at the same place (though her tortie wasn’t with her at that moment)!

We came home early for a few reasons. Sunday night into Monday’s weather was looking brutal - heavy rain, wind and temps dropping into the 30s overnight. We had our canopy blow away over the weekend in high winds and even with it weighted down with sandbags, it made us a bit nervous. Not to mention we were planning to leave Tuesday morning and packing wet gear is not fun. But most importantly the torties (and possibly Olive as well) were both having some major 💩💩💩 problems and Fig was also 🩸💩 🙀😿so we wanted to get things taken care of with our regular vet at home rather than go to an emergency vet in Maine. Humom got some probiotics for everyone and our vet said it is most likely acute colitis and probiotics was a good call so we just continue with that and observe if anything changes ❤️‍🩹 they have been happy, cuddly, and acting normal both while on the trip and since we have been home. Now Humom is going to tackle laundry and have a much needed nap 💤🥱😴

Nobody saw this coming 🙀🙀👀👀 it is a gloomy horribly rainy day and Fig and Olive appeared together on top of the cat tree, sharing the heating pad under the blanket like best buds. While they sometimes share a mom lap, they never spontaneously cuddled in the same spot before 🥹 it’s a 🌨️❄️🎄
