Wishing everyone a safe and happy 4th of July! Some safety tips for this weekend!! 🇺🇸🐴

🎆 Fireworks can be exciting for people, but they can be stressful and even dangerous for horses.

❤️ The loud noises, bright flashes, and unpredictable nature of fireworks can trigger a horse's natural flight response, increasing the risk of injury, damaged fencing, or escape. A little preparation before the celebrations begin can go a long way toward keeping your horse safe.

🤍 If possible, bring horses into a barn or secure paddock before fireworks start. Closing windows and doors, leaving the lights on, and using a barn-safe fan or radio can help reduce the impact of noise and flashing lights. Earplugs are another option for horses that are already accustomed to wearing them, but fireworks night shouldn't be the first time they're introduced. Be sure to let your horse get comfortable wearing earplugs before you plan to use them.

💙 Providing free-choice forage can help keep horses occupied while supporting normal digestive function during stressful situations. If your horse has a history of anxiety around fireworks, speak with your veterinarian ahead of time about appropriate management strategies.

🇺🇸 Before turnout, inspect your pastures for any new hazards, including firework debris, broken fencing, branches, or other objects that could cause injury or be accidentally ingested.

🎇 A little planning today can help make fireworks night much safer for your horse.
