Great Pyrenees Rescue of Western Illinois

Great Pyrenees Rescue of Western Illinois Our Rescue is no longer active. The dog on our logo is Jake. We adopted him from the Great Pyrenees Rescue of Central Illinois.

Since we adopted him, our Resort has fostered Pyrs and Pyr mixes for the same rescue. We decided that we would now like to things a step further....create a rescue for our area and continue our efforts to rescue and find loving forever homes for these wonderful "gentle giants".

Jake, our GPRWI mascot, crossed the Bridge this evening. I adopted him from GPRCI in 2011 and he led me to start our Rescue. He was a harder to place Pyr as he had Diabetes Insipidus, causing him to drink a 5 gallon bucket of water a day. During his life, he ruptured both of his ACL’s but, because of his Diabetes Insipidus, he was not a candidate for surgery. We made him comfortable and he enjoyed his days at the Rescue until he stopped eating yesterday. That was the first meal that he had ever missed. Tonight we decided it was time. Night Night, Bubby. Momma loves you ❤️. ~Tara

Everyone thought Minor’s photo was cute when I posted it Friday. It was. Who is Minor? He is one of our Sanctuary Pyrs. If we didn’t have the capabilities of a Sanctuary, guess where he’d be? Buried under our pine trees, quite bluntly. He was born and adopted here...and returned with a bite record. He is a very sweet boy, but he has an ornery side that, if you allow yourself to escalate with him, he will lash out. Many of you wonder why we are a Sanctuary and maybe wonder why we don’t adopt out any more and why we deserve donations. Our Sanctuary Pyrs are very well-loved and cared for by our staff and very limited volunteers. We have narrowed down and adopted out all of the Pyrs we felt we could adopt out. The remainder are ones that have been returned or never stood a chance with today’s disposable society. We are working towards giving them the comforts of a home environment, but that takes donations. I already pay for the majority of their funding....food, vet bills, staff, etc. I want the best for them, and I will do it on my own if I have to. So many have already failed them, I’m not going to. ~Tara

We lost another GPRWI alumni 😢. This is Scotch, who had just turned 5 years old recently. His mom (Muffin), dad (JoJo), and two big brothers, (Bert and my Ernie), came in as owner surrenders and Muffin was almost due with this litter that Scotch was a part of.

From his mom...”Sorry I haven't been keeping you two filled in, but Scotch went to the U of I, 2 weeks ago for his pooping issues. There was an abscess in his re**um, which they had to drain. He stayed overnight there, and had general anesthesia and an epidural.

When he came home he just wasn't the same, wouldn't eat or drink. I had lots of medicine to give him, which he hated and wouldn't take in treats. We tried all kinds of pet and people foods, he refused, took him back to the vet here for injections instead of the pills, and got him some appetite stimulant ointment. He just kept declining. He gave up and wouldn't eat at all the last 2 days, and couldn't keep down water yesterday.

Scotch just passed away this morning at 9:50, Thursday, October 11. He was only 5 years old. He was laying at the top of the back porch steps, in his favorite spot, and went, on his own, with both me and Dane, right there petting him and telling him he was a good boy, and it was ok to go. They just came and took his body away for cremation.

I miss my friend.”

This is so heartbreaking to lose one this young. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers❤️. ~Tara
