Some dogs get shaved to the shortest length nose to tail. And that’s okay! Baby girl was excessively matted and there was no other humane option than to shave her completely down.
I understand tangles and mats happens, that’s why I try my best to educate pet parents as much as I can.
This pup was “pelted” matted. Which means, “a severe matting condition where a dog or cat’s fur becomes tangled and knotted to the point where it forms a dense, tight layer against the skin.” To remove this type of mat, the shortest blade must be used. Brushing or dematting is not an option as it will 100% injure the pup. And any longer blades can catch the skin and cut them.
To prevent mats like this grooming every 6 weeks is absolutely necessary.
Doing a shorter haircut to maintain at home is also an option. If you live a busy life, unable to brush your dog, and unable to come every 6 weeks, a short haircut is the way to go. Easily manageable and can go farther in between visits (like 7-9 weeks depending on the length). (Of course you don’t have to go this short, but to prevent doing this short, lower haircuts are the move!).
Mats like this are extremely painful to pups as it’s a bunch of weight pulling on the skin. Skin issues, fleas, ticks can all hide underneath and if you don’t get your pup groomed these issues can grow much worse over time causing various amount of health concerns without being seen/treated.
If you want long, fluffy haircuts for your pups, learning to brush and comb at home is a must! With grooming at least every 3-4 weeks.
There’s much more that can be said, but I can only do so much. In order to achieve longer haircuts we must work as a team. Brushing at home, so I can achieve your desired haircut!
This is all said without judgement, life happens, things happen, and ultimately pet parents don’t know what they don’t know.
What can cause matting: swimming/wetness, not being thoroughly dried, friction from harnesses, rolling around in grass, & lack of consistent grooming/brushing.
I hope this post helps, and if you have any questions about grooming, dematting, tools to use to brush at home etc please do not hesitate to contact me!
