📑 The Importance of Proper Hoof Care in Sheep and Goats 🐐 🐑

Hoof care is a vital part of herd health management in sheep and goats. During farm visits, checking hoof condition offers key insight into the animals' overall well-being. Improperly maintained hooves can lead to pain, movement issues, infections, and reduced welfare.

🖋️Hoof condition also affects productivity. Healthy hooves support better mobility, feeding, and breeding performance. In particular, bucks and rams with overgrown or painful hooves may struggle to mount females, causing reduced fertility.

🖋️It is recommended to begin hoof shaping at six months of age to encourage healthy growth. In intensive systems, hooves should be trimmed every five months. Some farms even cull animals with abnormal hoof growth to support herd genetic improvement and prevent long-term issues.

🖋️Regular and accurate trimming ensures good mobility, health, and breeding success in small ruminants.

Caring for older sheep & goats 🐐🐑

07/19/2025

Just a reminder to take care of your stock!

So many intact critters that shouldn’t be!

Pigs…Goats….Sheep…Dogs….Cats…Llamas….Horses….Donkeys….Cattle….

Even if they are pretty colors, pretty papered, cute and fluffy, so friendly, or whatever your reasoning is…

Not every thing needs to be left intact and have the option to breed.
Unless the critter is absolutely phenomenal and you know it’s background and have a 100% sound reason to let it breed that does not involve pretty color or pretty name (s)….

Castrate it!
Neuter it!
Cut it!
Band it!
Eat it!

But stop sending animals out to breed that shouldn’t breed!

"I MAY BE STUPID......BUT THAT IS NOT A CALF!"

Those are the words that started it all! Welcome to DKH Destiny Farm, where we have raised quality dairy goats since 2001. In the early winter of 2001 I went to the local livestock auction, to buy some calves, and I fell in love with an Alpine dairy goat (Tifdoroyal Licorice Lameya) that went through the ring, with papers....... of course bred by something. Later we purchased a Nubian doe and kid from Don and Sandy Miller of Firebird Nubians and another Alpine doe (Khamsin I Can Two) from Bobbi McFaddan of Ebony -Rose. ...Well needless to say, one goat has turned into a whole herd.
