Just a curiosity for now. But new world screw worm is working its way north. Extra label treatment and prevention options are capstar and spinosad flea/tick treatments. The oral chews like nexgard and similar products work too.

Keep an eye on your older dog or cats claws. They don’t wear as much as normal sometimes. Claws can curl and continue to grow into the pad. I just noticed this on two of my cats. It takes special trimmers to cut the mail once it does this too.

I think everybody likes to help animals. I found this guy stuck in the basement and put him outside. The weather is going to be hot and humid. If you could put out water for a critter or two in a shady spot I’m sure it would be appreciated. And watch out for the humans who might not have AC too. Stay cool 😎

The heat is causing some issues for pets. If you dont have AC in your home be especially aware of your pets comfort. A fan helps, or if they can sit on cool cement in the shade or in the basement where it’s cool. Keep fresh cool water available and if your dog likes water, keeping pads cool in a pool would help. They sweat through pads and their nose and cool off by panting.
I’ve seen some lethargy, gi upset and a case of maggot infestation in the last two weeks.

I’m always thinking of prevention tips. Prevention is my bread and butter.

If you want to be proactive, take pictures of your pet in the same location and same pose every three months. I can see age changes at annual visits. If something seems off you can show me the pictures and I can look for changes over time.

A couple prevention tips of the day.

Strong scents, dust and smoke affect your pets. Red runny eyes, sneezing or coughing are signs. If you see these symptoms try tone down the possible cause and see if it gets better.

Dogs that hang their head out the window when you’re driving might be at risk of ear hematomas from their ears flapping in the wind. Id roll up the windows at higher speeds.

Have a good weekend.

I like to try to prevent problems for pets. How about this idea? Does anyone out there do a warm up period for their dog before strenuous play or exercise? I’m thinking people stretch so we don’t get injured. Why not dogs too? I see a lot of older dogs with arthritis that is painful and can be debilitating.

Well I’m getting a lot of urgent or emergency calls. So from a preventive point of view, it sure seems like grey hounds are prone to skin lacerations because they run like the wind and run into things. 🤷🏻‍♀️ and usually when you’re on vacation it seems lol.

Bromethalin rat poison is toxic especially to cats. It has no antidote and causes brain swelling. I prefer the anticoagulant rodenticides because you have time to prevent symptoms if you catch your dog eating it. And a mouse that gets it won’t likely poison a cat that eats it. Bromethalin can poison your cat by eating a mouse that’s ingested it. I’m posting this because it may have just gotten one of my kitty patients 😞 these poisons are nothing to mess with. I don’t know why the powers that be decided to take the anticoagulants away and give us bromethalin instead.
