It is with great sadness we announced that our beloved Chunky Monkey has crossed the rainbow bridge.
Chunky was abandoned as a newborn puppy because she was part put bull we figure approximately 16 years ago. She was cared for for the first few years of her life by Bobby mulvey of Shelbyville. She stayed in a dog kennel in the backyard for the first couple of years of her life and never knew a single person. I found her there and having full ability to care for her and leaving her behind was not something I could live with. I took Chunky Monkey home with me and she never went in a cage again. She was given freedom. She was a great trail Dog and always stayed close to home. She loved going on trail rides with us to Garrett's farm in Wartrace in her mid years.
She never growled or bit anyone except Waylon but he started it. Lol
She was the greatest companion for me and I didn't even know it.
She liked people eventually but took some time getting used to them.
She would stand off at a distance look at you and wag her tail like I want to come over and say hi and let you pet me but I'm scared. So we just let her do what she wanted and what made her comfortable.
She hated being inside unless it was storming. Eventually she decided she liked being inside especially if it was hot. But she didn't like being in the same room with anyone. She always picked a quiet room away from everything.
She was an emotionally damaged dog from living in a cage isolated from human companionship in the beginning but she made a miraculous recovery in the end.
Chunky had recently been diagnosed with bladder cancer. Being 16 years old, she also was dealing with some dementia blindness and going deaf. In her last days, she seemed to be more lost than aware.
Yesterday seemed hard on her. So today, I made the decision and she was able to say goodbye on a good day. She got extra treats, extra snuggles, extra pets and she got to go bye-bye one last time in my truck.
Her last moment and last memory was getting her head scratched by her mamma with a smile on her face and she gently went to sleep.
I wasn't supposed to get attached to this dog. She was just supposed to be rescued. My heart is shattered Ya'll.
Rest easy sweet girl and say hi to Crosstie. I'll meet you two at the gate when it's my time.
