🐾 Caring for Our Golden Oldies: Senior Pet Comfort Tips 🐾

As our furry family members age, their needs change. Sometimes, the signs that they are slowing down or experiencing discomfort can be incredibly subtle.

Here is what to look out for at home and how you can help keep them happy and comfortable in their golden years:

🔍 What to Look Out For:

Subtle Behavior Changes: Hesitating before climbing stairs, jumping onto the couch, or getting into the car.

Changes in Routine: Sleeping more deeply, shifting positions frequently to get comfortable, or restlessness at night.

Altered Gait: Stiff movements when first waking up, or a slight limp that seems to fade as they move around.

Irritability: Showing less tolerance for being handled, groomed, or interacting with younger pets.

🏡 Simple Ways to Improve At-Home Comfort:
Add Traction: Place non-slip rugs or yoga mats over hardwood or tile floors to prevent slipping.

Raise the Dishes: Elevate food and water bowls so they don’t have to strain their neck and shoulders to eat.

Upgrade the Bed: Provide a supportive, orthopedic memory-foam bed away from drafts.

"Our chocolate lab, Ham, was unfortunately in need of emergency care this weekend. The team at AESH was so kind and you can tell their team really cares about the animals they treat. Dr. Simot kept us updated with Ham’s care and was available to us via text as needed. I hope we don’t need another emergency visit, but if we do this is 100% where we will bring our pets."

"Zubeia saw Dr. Harmon in cardiology for her pulmonic stenosis and he was wonderful with her, and very kind and personable. He put me at ease, which I appreciate. The tech who worked with Zubeia was also wonderful, creating a happy and easy environment for her, and letting her jump up and give kisses all she wanted. The cost of an echocardiogram was fair and about what we've always paid. No hidden costs, we were told the price up front and nothing changed. We're very pleased with the care Zubi received and we're grateful to have established her cardiology care here. Also, the waiting room was somewhat sectioned, giving pet parents with reactive dogs the ability to sort of sit apart from everyone else. Our reactive boy passed away in March, but after dealing with his reactivity at the vet for years, I immediately noticed and appreciated this about the waiting room when I walked in."

From the ER to the Podium! 🎓

We are bursting with pride for our very own Dr. Elaine Sheikh, who recently had the distinct honor of serving as the commencement speaker for Michigan State University’s graduation!

Dr. Sheikh’s dedication to emergency medicine and her passion for the veterinary profession are an inspiration to us every day, and now, she’s shared that spark with the Class of 2026. Join us in congratulating Dr. Sheikh on this incredible achievement!
