We took in 20 guinea pigs into our intake program today— all sweet, all deserving, and all a reminder of just how quickly small animals can multiply when things get out of hand. Situations like this happen more often than people realize, because guinea pigs can reproduce extremely quickly — often before owners even know they have a mixed-gender pair.
Guinea pigs can begin reproducing very young, and a single mixed-gender pair can turn into dozens before you even realize what’s happening. That’s how situations like this start — not from bad intentions, but from not knowing how fast it can snowball.
✨ The good news? This is completely preventable.
Guinea pigs thrive when kept in same-gender pairs or groups. They still get companionship, enrichment, and happiness — without the risk of unexpected babies or overwhelmed owners needing emergency placement.
We’re grateful to be able to step in, provide care, and help these guinea pigs find safe, educated homes. If you’re considering guinea pigs (or already have them), learning their basics truly makes all the difference — for them and for you.
Every one of these guinea pigs is friendly, social, and deserving of a stable home where their needs are understood. If you’ve been considering adding guinea pigs to your family, some of these sweet faces will soon be available looking for their forever home. Taking a guinea pig home not only gives them a second chance, it also helps us continue taking in animals when they need somewhere safe to land.
