Help! I’m Hungry 🪺

In late June of 2026, two orphaned sibling Black-headed Grosbeaks were discovered on the grounds in a remote area in the hills of Saratoga. With no parents in sight, these vocalizing, gaping hatchlings needed help immediately!

Once in our care, they were mildly dehydrated, given warm fluids, and placed in one of our knitted nests in an incubator. At our hospital, we use donated crocheted nests for young birds because they can provide support and warmth and are washable and easy to sanitize.

For six weeks, these hungry hatchlings were fed throughout the day, starting at 30 minutes, then 45 minutes, and eventually every hour. At night, they will sleep and rest so they can grow and develop.

Once they were self-feeding, they were moved to an outdoor aviary to practice flying, perching, and building strength. This extensive process was made possible by the dedication of our staff and interns.

As the photos show, they began their journey as tiny hatchlings with hardly any feathers. Just two months later, they transformed into healthy young birds ready to return to the wild.

Black-headed Grosbeaks migrate to our area in late spring and return to Mexico in the late fall, where they spend their winter months.

Fun Fact: Black-headed Grosbeaks have a strong, conical beak that acts like a heavy-duty nutcracker, which allows them to crack open hard seeds and fruit pits. Now that’s a strong beak!

Adoption update on Cali 🥰

We adopted her earlier this year in January and she has been the absolute best and sweetest addition to our family. She is the most loving, kind, and silly girl. She loves people and going to dog parks, she loves ice cream and pup cups, and she loves going on long walks with me and early morning snuggles in bed with us. 🩷

Here are some updated photos of her during the months. We are eternally grateful for her as she is the best dog ever and this was truly meant to be.

The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA’s Pet of the Week is Hermalinda. ♥️

Hermalinda is 10-year-old yellow-bellied slider turtle looking for her forever pond. She is every bit as beautiful as her name sounds. Hermalinda loves to spend her time basking in the sun, munching on greens, and swimming the day away without a care in the world. She’s a sweet and mild-mannered girl who’s ready to rest and relax in her new home. Her ideal home would have a large outdoor pond with a predator-proof enclosure to keep her safe. She’ll be a quiet family member and not a big cuddler, but you will be endlessly entertained watching her explore her habitat!

Stop by Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA to meet Hermalinda ID # A0992590 or call 650-340-7022 ext. 354 with questions. Visit phs-spca.org for more information.
