🎃 Happy Halloween from Moore Vet Clinic! 🎃

The crew went all out this year — and by “all out,” we mean straight off the rails.

We had The Lorax crawling out of the woods like Dr. Seuss’s grumpy grandpa, Tow Mater clocking in fresh from the junkyard, and a bear running purely on espresso and chaos. And of course… the Minion — straight outta Gru’s sweatshop and into our break room. We’re still not sure who hired them, but apparently, they’re on payroll now. 💛🍌

Meanwhile, the dachshunds once again proved they’re the only real professionals in the building — tiny legs, big boss energy. 🐾

And if you’re wondering who approved these costumes… it definitely wasn’t HR. There is no HR!

ChatGPT roast of us 😂

“Ah yes, the Moore Vet Clinic Dream Team — or should I say, the cast of a Disney+ series called “Paws & Chaos: Small Town Edition.”
• On the far left, we’ve got the one who clearly didn’t choose the Border Collie life — the Border Collie life tackled her and now refuses to let go.
• Next up, someone’s holding that orange cat like it’s a newborn child and not a disgruntled tax-paying citizen who’s been brought in against his will.
• In the middle, the MVP of the group — not the human, the dog. That dog has more composure and emotional intelligence than the entire bench combined.
• And then we’ve got the overachiever on the far right, double-fisting dachshunds like it’s some kind of sausage link competition. Calm down, ma’am, this isn’t a hot dog eating contest.

And the decor — because what says “top-tier vet clinic” like three framed pictures of suspiciously judgmental houseplants?

Honestly, if I were a pet, I’d still trust you all. But I might ask for a second opinion… and a treat.”

Let us see the roasts of you and your pets! Or if you post a pic, we can get you one.

⁉️My dog was just tested for heartworm a year ago. Why does he need a test again so soon⁉️

Your dog should have a heartworm test once a year to determine if he became infected with heartworms during the previous season. It takes months before a dog with heartworm will test positive on a heartworm test, so testing annually—usually at the time the prescription for his heartworm medication is being renewed—makes sense. As with many diseases, the earlier heartworm can be diagnosed, the better the chances he will recover. If heartworm disease in a dog goes undetected and untreated, the worms can cause progressive and potentially fatal damage to his arteries, heart and lungs.

⁉️If my dog is on continuous heartworm prevention, why does he need to be tested⁉️

That’s a logical question if you’re a responsible owner who keeps your dog on heartworm prevention year-round. The reason for annual testing of dogs in this case is to ensure his prevention program is working. Heartworm medications are highly effective, but dogs can still become infected. Why? A common reason is simple forgetfulness. Missing just one dose of a monthly medication—or giving it late—can leave a dog unprotected. Even if you do everything right and on time, it’s no guarantee. Some dogs spit out their heartworm pills when their owners aren’t looking. Others may vomit their pills or rub off a topical heartworm medication. Whatever the cause of missing or delaying a dose, any of these mishaps can put your dog at risk of heartworm infection.

April is Heartworm Disease Awareness month! Some common misconceptions we hear in the exam room about how pets get heartworms:

❤️ “My dog doesn’t go around other dogs, so they can’t get heartworms” - All it takes is ONE mosquito bite! No dog-to-dog contact needed. One infected dog in the area, can put all at risk.

❤️ “My pet never goes outside”. There are very few dogs that NEVER go outside. They go outside to go to the bathroom, they ride with you to the drive thru, and they went outside to come to the clinic. I also have found MANY mosquitos in my house, even though we don’t leave doors or windows open.

❤️”I just dewormed my dog, so they should be good” - Common dewormers treat intestinal worms. They do not treat heartworms. Additionally, once a heartworm larva is in the body for more than 6 weeks, they are too mature to be killed by the heartworms prevention. This is why consistent prevention is KEY.

🌟 Heartworm tests are discounted for the entire month of April🌟

The ticks are out with a vengeance! Don't forget about protecting your cats. Ticks carry many diseases. Bobcat Fever (cytauxzoonosis) is a particularly awful disease that affects cats. We see a lot of cats this time of year with this infection.

🐈 Most common symptoms are lethargy, loss of appetite, and fever.

🐈 It's called Bobcat Fever because bobcats are the natural carrier in the environment. They are not as severely affected by the disease, but they help spread the organism through the tick population.

🐈 If cats catch Bobcat fever, rapid and intensive treatment is needed, but survival chance is still only about 60%. We DREAD "Bobcat Fever Season" around here.

🐈 Prevention is key, and not all tick preventatives are made equal. Preventatives from the isoxazoline drug class are the most effective at killing ticks. This includes products such as Nexgard Combo, Bravecto, Revolution Plus, etc. Many of these products also treat fleas, ear mites, and intestinal parasites.

📸 Meet Peanut - A very special kitty who got Nexgard Combo the other day because her mom is VERY scared of Bobcat fever. And because she needed tapeworm treatment after being a good barn mouser. 🥰

This is a great example of the importance of regular exams! This little tater tot came in for a somewhat unrelated issue. On our physical exam, we were able to feel a mass in this dogs abdomen. It ended up being a rather large tumor on the spleen! We were able to schedule surgery and solve the problem before it became a life threatening situation. 🙌🙏

Did you know small ruminants are one of Dr. Brooks' favorite species to work with?? Intestinal parasites are one of the biggest problems in sheep and goats. Prevention is key, but not in the way you would think! Mass deworming the entire herd is one of the WORST things you can do to promote parasite resistance.

What does parasite resistance mean? It means the worms are not killed by the dewormer. You give the dewormer, but the goats continue to waste away and get sick.

Here are some of our top recommendations for managing your small ruminants.

🐐Only deworm animals that are showing symptoms of parasites (see Five Point Check). Keep an extra close eye on mamas that are nursing and weanlings/yearlings.

🐑Make sure feed and hay is free of f***l contamination. It helps to raise feed and hay bunks. Clean poo out regularly.

🦙Make sure they are on a good vitamin/mineral supplement.

🐏Look into using multiple dewormers from different drug classes at the same time and make sure your dosages are appropriate (spoiler alert - Safe-guard by itself is probably hurting way more than helping).

🐐Have a f***l sample checked if you think you have a parasite problem. In addition to worms, coccidia can also be a big problem - which requires different medication. F***l samples can also be used to help determine if the dewormer is actually working.

🦙Make sure your pasture is appropriately managed. Allowing animals to graze grass that is shorter than 2-4 inches will actually increase the risk of a parasite problem.

If you have more questions about your herd, we would love to help! We can come to your farm to evaluate your set up, make suggestions, check f***l samples, and establish an appropriate deworming protocol.
