We are currently looking for feedback on a new product for dogs! There is now an injectable Bravecto on the market. We currently sell the Bravecto tablets, which is the flea/tick prevention chew that lasts for 3 months. This new injectable version lasts for one year! Benefits of the injection would be not having to remember to give the tablet every 3 months, not having to buy the tablet every 3 months, and it would be much easier to give to dogs that currently do not like eating the Bravecto chews. The downside is that the upfront cost would be more than the tablets, as you’d be paying for a year instead of 3 months at a time. Before we launch this product and stock it on our shelves, we were coming to ya’ll to see if anyone would even be interested in it.

NOW is the time to get your horses vaccinated against West Nile Virus if you haven’t already. Each year we see horses in late summer and early fall succumb to this preventable, yet deadly disease. West Nile is typically spread by mosquitos that become infected through migrating birds.

Your veterinarian is the best source of information regarding what vaccines your horse may need based on the viruses endemic to your area and your horses lifestyle and risk factors.

We pay special attention to a variety of factors when choosing a vaccine and when administered by your veterinarian they are backed by the companies vaccine assurance program so you can relax knowing your horse is getting THE BEST protection available anywhere.

This is Eve. She’s been looking for her favorite rope chew toy for days now, but can’t seem to find it anywhere. Don’t worry, Dr Peterman found it yesterday. It was in Eves colon. Eve is happy to be reunited with the toy and her vomiting and abdominal pain have subsided. She has lost unsupervised play privileges, but she doesn’t seem to mind.

Dr Olson performed a bovine urethrostomy last week. This steer was an interesting case because although he did have urine in his abdomen he continued to urinate somewhat normally. The decision was made to perform the salvage procedure and a stone was removed from the sigmoid flexure of his urethra.

A P/U surgery is done to save the life of a steer whose urethra becomes obstructed by a stone. These cases typically present as a steer that can not urinate or as a “waterbelly” a term that indicates an abdomen full of urine after the urethra ruptures and leaks urine into the abdomen. If left untreated these patients can succumb to sepsis. A urethrostomy can prolong their life allowing them to finish out. This surgery involves using local anesthesia as an epidural to block the hind end region. Incising into the perineal area and bluntly dissecting out the p***s. After exteriorizing the p***s amputation above the affected area is performed, a urinary catheter is placed into the bladder and the remaining urethra is sutured to the skin.

It feels good to help farmers and ranchers care for their animals. Even though this steer will one day be protein for a hungry person, today it is a living animal that deserves the best care we can give.

Elanco has been studying pradofloxacin over 10 years and they have now made it available as Pradalex. It is a third generation fluoroquinolone antimicrobial which is in the same class as enrofloxacin (Baytril) and danofloxacin (Advocin). Pradalex has been shown in studies to be an effective treatment for BRD in cattle targeting the pathogens Mannheimia hemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, Histophilus somni and Mycoplasma bovis and SRD in swine targeting the pathogens Bordetella bronchiseptica, Glaesserella (Haemophilus) parasuis, Pasteurella multicida, Streptococcus suis and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae.

Pradalex’s claim to fame is that it works faster than other antimicrobials by beginning to kill bacteria within 5 minutes of treatment and reaching maximum therapeutic concentration in plasma within 45 minutes.

Pradalex is the only fluoroquinolone that has equal affinity for both enzymes responsible for DNA replication (DNA gyrase and Topoisomerase IV) which is why it kills gram positive and gram negative bacteria and is considered more potent and more broad spectrum than other fluoroquinolones.
It is also considered low risk of creating bacterial resistance because it spends only 8 hours in the MSW (mutant selection window).

Long story short, Pradalex is a new fluoroquinolone that works quickly and is excreted quickly with only a 4 day withdrawal in cattle and 2 days in swine. It is effective against the primary BRD and SRD pathogens and targets them in a novel way.

Pradalex is labeled to treat cattle less than 12 months old and in weaned swine intended for slaughter.

Talk to your veterinarian about how to add this medication to your toolbox.

💉NOW is a great time to vaccinate your horse against West Nile Virus. 💉

Peak West Nile Virus season begins late summer/ early fall! We are already starting to see positive West Nile cases in the area. Vaccinating your horses now will allow their immune system the time it needs to build up a high number of antibodies before peak season.

There are lots of different combinations of equine vaccines available. Your veterinarian is a great resource to help evaluate which vaccines could best benefit your horse’s lifestyle whether at home or on the road.

Call now for a quick vaccination appointment to get your horse/ horses best protected for this season!
