Yesterday we said goodbye to our wonderful rainbow chicken, Maui. A little over a year ago I noticed that he seemed to he plucking during a bad molt. Being the rational vet I am, I brought him in right away for a full workup. Unfortunately we found out that he was both bornavirus and antiganglioside antibody positive. He managed well with medical therapy and supplements until a little over two months ago when he started destroying all his feathers. We adjusted meds and I hoped he would stabilize, but unfortunately this weekend he began to self mutilate while already on extensive therapy. Due to concerns for his quality of life I made the decision to help him pass peacefully as the severity of his condition was unfair to him. It was far sooner than I ever thought he'd be gone, but I am glad for the time I got with him.

Protective cover or member of the Scout Regiment? This sweetheart came in for limping and we found a femoral fracture. It was a tough repair but we were able to get it realigned. To help prevent her from getting at her hardware and sutures we gave her a cloak! She is currently doing well and we hope she continues to recover well!

Cutest patient of the day before I even get to work. This fawn is only a day old and fell into a hole near the house. Got this little one up and out of the hole and mom was checking in soon after.

One of the sempervivum succulents in one of my Kings' Monitors enclosure is blooming. One of the benefits of bioactive is getting to embrace being a crazy reptile person AND crazy plant person.

Do you have a favorite monitor species? Varanids are some of my favorite reptiles to work with, and this Peach Throated Monitor is a wonderful example. This crazy kid needed a toe removed due to a constriction injury.

Something I was taught by mentors in school that contradicted the traditional dogma. Interested to see if and how this effects management of GI stasis going forward for various clinicians.

The administration of prokinetic drugs at doses currently suggested in formularies did not result in clinical changes in healthy rabbits.

This young roo knows how to arrive in style! This red kangaroo came in for a wellness exam today. She was very well handled with a great owner, making her exam a smooth process. This is particularly important for kangaroos as they are highly susceptible to capture myopathy: a disease complex associated with stress that can be fatal. Thankfully this little one was plenty content to just lounge in her pouch.
