Very excited for the future of Sunflower Equine Veterinary Clinic and Seven Oaks Ranch!

Meet Our Owners 🤍🐎

Traci Gentry, DVM of Sunflower Equine Veterinary Clinic, along with her husband Thomas and their two children, Scott (6) and Emma (3), are excited to share their newest adventure—Seven Oaks Ranch!

This year is dedicated to “The Year of the Horse” as we begin a journey to renovate and preserve this beautiful facility for generations to come. Our vision is simple: to create a welcoming space for people of all ages and disciplines who share one common passion—the love of the horse.

In just 4 months, we’ve already made incredible progress:
✨ New indoor arena footing
✨ 25 newly renovated stalls
✨ Fully upgraded tack room
✨ 4 onsite trainers

And we’re just getting started—many more exciting additions are planned in the coming years!

We’re also thrilled to share that there are plans to relocate Sunflower Equine Veterinary Clinic to Seven Oaks Ranch in the future. While no official date has been set, the vision is underway to develop a true rehabilitation center for injured equine athletes.

Our amazing management team is in place with Robyn Bain and Courtney Reppar—two phenomenal horsewomen helping bring this dream to life.

🚨 NOW OFFERING BOARDING 🚨
Stalls are available immediately for $800/month:
✔️ Daily turnout (8 AM – 3 PM)
✔️ Hay fed 4 times daily
✔️ Free choice water
✔️ Maintenance feed included

*Specialized geriatric care is available; additional fees may apply depending on care needs and feeding requirements.*

As an equine boarding facility owned and managed by an equine veterinarian, we are committed to providing exceptional care and attention to every horse.

We couldn’t be more excited for what’s ahead at Seven Oaks Ranch. Stay tuned and come grow with us! 🌻🐴

🐴❄️ WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY ❄️🐴

Uncertain and dangerously cold weather is approaching. Friday. Preparation—not panic—is key. Please do not make drastic or sudden changes, but be ready.

📸 Photo shows examples of helpful supplies to have on hand.

Winter Hydration & Gut Support (Keep It Simple):

💧 Warm water whenever possible.

🧂 Salt on grain: 1–2 Tbsp twice daily

🍯 Molasses or Karo syrup added to water to encourage drinking

🧃 Gatorade or electrolytes (always offer plain water too)

🥣 Soaked feed / mash – Purina RepleniMash is excellent

🦠 GastroGard for gastric protection when stress increases

Medications:

💉 Banamine is good to have on hand
⚠️ Always consult your veterinarian before administering

Most Important Reminders:

❗ Do NOT panic

❗ Avoid sudden feed or management changes

❗ Consistency + hydration = prevention, not reaction

Cold stress increases risk for impaction colic, dehydration, and ulcers. Planning ahead makes all the difference.

📞 If you’re unsure what’s appropriate for your horse—call your veterinarian. There’s no substitute for guidance from someone who knows your horse’s history.

Stay warm and prepared ❄️🐴

⚠️ EHV-1 OUTBREAK UPDATE ⚠️

There is an active Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1) outbreak in barrel horses. Initial cases were linked to the WPRA event in Waco, TX (Nov 5–9), and more cases appeared at the BFA event at Lazy E, which has now been cancelled.

📍 Confirmed cases so far: Texas, Oklahoma, and now Louisiana.

If you attended any of these events:
• Quarantine your horses at home for at least 2 weeks
• Check temperatures twice daily (fever = 101.5°F or higher)

EHV-1 symptoms can include: respiratory disease, abortions, and neurologic signs. Contact your veterinarian if your horse develops a fever or any other symptoms.

Vaccination Info:
• If your horse was vaccinated for EHV-1/4 within the last 90 days, no action is needed right now.
• If you plan to travel and your horse is over 90 days from its last EHV-1/4 vaccine, call us to schedule a booster.

Additional Recommendations:
• All barrel horses that traveled in the past 2 weeks should quarantine and monitor temps, even if they didn’t attend the known TX/OK/LA events—horses from the WPRA event may have traveled to other locations.
• No cases reported in other disciplines yet, but owners of any recently traveled horses should check temperatures and limit horse movement for now.

For more information on EHV-1, please refer to this link: https://equinediseasecc.org/news/article/Equine-Herpesvirus-Myeloencephalopathy-(EHM)-Outbreak

Stay safe and monitor your horses closely. 💛🐴

The Equine Disease Communication Center is monitoring an outbreak of EHM that originated at the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) World Finals and Elite Barrel Race event Nov 5-9. To date, officially confirmed cases have been reported in the following states-

And
🎉 Happy Birthday!🥳

Dr. Katie Haukos joined our team last year through the merger of her clinic with ours, allowing us to expand our clientele and serve a broader community of horse owners with top-tier care. 🌻 Meet the Team Monday 🌻

Say hello to Lauren McCain, one of our incredible Veterinary Assistants here at Sunflower Equine Veterinary Clinic!

Lauren joined our team in January, and her main job is being Dr. Haukos’ full-time road assistant—wrangling horses, gear, paperwork and the occasional coffee stop with expert-level skill. 🚙💼🐴

With a background in showing, training, and selling both horses and mules, Lauren brings unmatched real-world knowledge and a calm, confident energy to every appointment. She also runs a breeding program focused on mules, drafts, and ranch horses—so when it comes to horsemanship, she walks the walk (and rides it, too).

Whether she’s holding a nervous horse, easing a worried client, or just wrangling the day into shape, Lauren’s steady presence makes her an essential part of the Sunflower Vet family.

We’re lucky to have her! 💛

🌻 Meet the Team Monday at Sunflower Equine Veterinary Clinic continues with Karla Kelly — aka the OG assistant and lovingly known as Kar-Kar by the resident kiddos around the clinic.

Karla has been a cornerstone of our team since 2017, joining under Dr. Palmer as one of our very first veterinary assistants. Born and raised in Louisburg, KS, she’s been immersed in the horse world since 2005 — from show grooming to training — and brings unmatched experience, care, and dedication to everything she does.

These days, Karla lives on her family’s farm in Louisburg, where she shares life with an adorable crew of horses, goats, dogs, cats, and chickens. Outside of the clinic, you’ll find her running, hiking, riding, reading, or doting on her sister’s kids. Oh, and did we mention she’s about to run her very first marathon? 🏃‍♀️🎉

We’re beyond lucky to have Karla on the team — her heart, hard work, and love for animals shine through every day! 💙

Meet the team Monday! 🌻

🐎✨Dr. Kelsey Bierbaum (pronounced Beer-Baum) aka: Dr. B, joined our team in 2020, bringing in a wealth of knowledge and talent. She was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska and graduated from Iowa State Vet School in 2017. She honed her skills with an internship at Wisconsin Equine Veterinary Clinic just outside Milwaukee.

🐴❤️ Dr. B’s passion for horses runs deep—she’s been riding most of her life and her horse, Tucker, can often be spotted grazing alongside our resident mule, Ruby Slippers, in the front pasture.

When she’s not showcasing her well-rounded expertise in general equine medicine, including her exceptional chiropractic skills, she’s cherishing time with her husband, Darren, and their son, Russell, born in June 2024—the true loves of her life. Dr. B’s talent and infectious energy light up our clinic, and we’re beyond grateful to have her on the team!
