So while thinking about the barns transition from a 4-H/FFA project to rabbit hobby we have some rough estimates of what Riley and Caitlin have done with it since starting. We figure between the two kids having 12 livestock show sales slots and 6 years of providing over 2000 rabbits to restaurants they grossed roughly $22,000.00. This has paid for feed, care, supplies, cages, entry fees and a barn. They still had/have money left for university studies. And with all proper businesses, they had a yearly paycheck to spend then. The kids showed 16 Grand Champions and sold 3 Grand Champions to others. They had 2 ARBA Grand Champion rabbits. 6 Reserve Grand Champions. 31 Best of Breeds. 15 Best Opposite S*x of Breed. We all learned that when you invest the proper money into a livestock breeding project, you do well. And that rabbits are the last livestock project that can truly be ran as a proper and money making business. Its been and incredible ride.

Just did Caitlin's entries (feels weird Riley is not showing) for both the Grant County Fair and SNMSF&R. Deadlines for both are tomorrow! So rare they hit the same day. Was kinda nice though. It is done! Dont forget yours!

Changes to the Grant County Fair this year. Please take note. Thanks

Well that was just a first for this rabbit breeder. Coca, one of our current Holland Lops, was having trouble delivering a kit. So I had to help her. Lost the kit and so far momma is fine. I on the other hand am still a little queasy. 🤤

Trying something new to schedule barn cleaning this year. Shawn and I have already but a day and a half work into cage and equipment cleaning. Riley was up bright and early removing poo to his grandpa's new garden patch (you should see the size of his pumpkins!), and hopefully it will all be done today. We have been working on downsizing the barn, as we have had a drop in meat sales and with Riley graduating in spring, we will have less help as well. We have sold some show quality stock, and are finding new homes for our mutts who helped produce meat. Still some left both ways if anyone is interested. Feels good as well as sad to be streamlining, but right now, that is where the future is.

What can 14 rabbits (two litters roughly) do? 19lbs of sausage, 16 pints shredded meat (with red chile for tamales), 20 pints broth and 10 pints stock. They do it in 12 weeks from birth, in a 30"x24" cage, and approximately $35.00 in food. If you are into homesteading, or just eating more green, they are they way to go. Not to mention they are the healthiest meat protein there is. Go on, research it.

So fair awards came down like so. At Grant County Fair, Riley Brabson had a Reserve Best in Class, a Best in Class, Grand Champion Meat Rabbit (Broken Black Satin), and Grand Champion Show Rabbit (Chocolate Satin Rabbit). Those are the large solid purple rosettes and top two buckles. Caitlin Brabson had two Reserve Best in Class. At SNMSF&R Riley won Best Reserve in Open Breeding (Chinchilla Satin Rabbit). That's the purple and white rosette and bottom buckle. They both had a bunch of those blue County Best of Breeds and SNMSF&R blue 1st places. Caitlin got a 6th place in stewer meat class at SNMSF&R, but was not quite high enough to pull into the sale this year.

A most excellent Rabbit Pot Pie we had the other night. Recipe is as follows: 1lb cooked rabbit (cubed or shredded), 1/2 cup cooked carrots,1/2 cup cooked potatoes, 1/2 cup cooked green beans, 1/2 cup cooked corn, 1/2 cup butter, 1/3 cup chopped onion, 1/2 cup flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon pepper, 2 1/3 cups rabbit broth, and 2 9in unbaked pie crusts. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. In saucepan over med heat, cook onions in butter until soft; stir in flour, salt and pepper. Slowly stir in the broth and simmer until thick (gravy). Layer rabbit, carrots, potatoes, green beans and corn into crust. Pour gravy over rabbit and vegetables. Cover with second crust and slit it for steam to escape. Bake 30 to 35 minutes until golden brown and bubbly. Let sit 10 minutes before serving. This would traditionally have peas instead of green beans but our son has a pea allergy. Yea, he was real heart broke over that one! LOL

My oh my, so far behind. I have got to get fair awards posted, rabbits for sale as well as figures on the rabbit harvest. So in tune with all this, expect some posts the next few days relating to showing, selling and eating rabbit!

Where do you begin if you want to start a 4H rabbit project? Here is a list of a few things to consider.

What a busy couple of days in the barn! We have been over show rabbits three times. Once to see which fair to take them to, second to separate them for classes and do entries, third to tattoo. My arms are nicely striped red now! LOL And finally Riley Brabson and I did some very long counting of awards and rabbit numbers that have come through the barn for his many scholarship applications. Over 2,000 rabbits sold for meat production to restaurants. What an amazing business these kids have built from a few hutches, breeding trios and fair rabbits. Never underestimate the small livestock.

These boys are two of three pet quality Holland Lops. The other is a small doe. They do not meet breed standards and as such are being sold without a pedigree. $35.00 each. At 4lbs and under, they are excellent to keep in the house, much like a gerbil or hamster. We are willing to teach about their care and up keep. If interested, please message us. Thanks
