Even our own staff is not immune to veterinary emergencies. Meet our office manager’s dog Stella. Stella got into a jar of joint supplements and ate about 10x her daily dose. Luckily, we were able to get her in and use medications to make her vomit, followed by activated charcoal to help keep her body from absorbing any remaining toxin. She is now recovered and doing great!

Unfortunately, toxins for pets can commonly be found around most homes. Most people know chocolate is bad for dogs, but there are a number of other toxins to watch for including medications, certain household plants, cleaning products and foods.

The first step when you think your pet may have ingested something toxic is to call the Pet Poison Hotline at 1-800-213-6680. They will be able to give you the best information of how your pet may be affected and be able to start a case that your veterinarian can reference to decide on what treatment is best.

It is also important to try to get to your vet within an hour of ingestion of the substance so they can give medications to make your pet vomit. It is no longer recommended to use hydrogen peroxide at home, as it can cause stomach ulcers so getting to a vet is best.

If you have any further questions about potential household toxins and how to keep your pet safe, please call the office at (304)472-0323!

Coming in a bit late, this week’s purrrfect 🌟Pet of the Week🌟 is Rory! This beauty was in this week to update her rabies vaccine. While some pet owners, such as owners who have indoor-only cats, may think they do not need to keep their pet’s rabies vaccine up to date, that is actually not true! Rabies vaccines are required by law in the state of West Virginia for all cats and dogs. The vaccine must be administered by a licensed veterinarian and cannot be purchased at stores such as Tractor Supply. To schedule an appointment for your pet’s rabies vaccine or to check your pet’s vaccine status, please call the office at (304)472-0323.

On the opposite side of the weight spectrum from last week’s winner, Jax, is 🌟 this week’s Pet of the Week, Larry! 🌟 Larry is a four month old dachshund who was in for his final set of puppy vaccines. We recommend puppies receive vaccines every 3-4 weeks starting at 6 weeks of age and ending at 16 weeks or older. Vaccines are very important for puppies (and all dogs) to help prevent them from contracting serious diseases like distemper, parvovirus and leptospirosis. Puppies are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their last set of vaccines and until that time owners should avoid public places with their pet such as dog parks. During their initial series, puppies are also given a dewormer to cover for hookworms and roundworms, both being very common in puppies. To schedule an appointment for your new family member, please call the office at (304)472-0323!

Can those sweet puppy dog eyes get any cuter?! 🌟 This week our Pet of the Week is Jax! 🌟 He is an Old English mastiff puppy and at only four months old is already a whopping 54 pounds! For our large breed puppies, we recommend staying on a large breed puppy food until a year of age before transitioning to a large breed adult food. Our office also recommends to owners who have larger breeds to wait until at least 12 months old before spaying/neutering, as long as they are confident in their abilities to keep their pets from any accidental breedings. This time frame allows their pup time to mature and ensure proper bone and joint development. During the time of their spay/neuter, we also offer a gastropexy procedure. This procedure tacks the stomach to the abdominal wall to help prevent the twisting of their stomach, which is most commonly seen in large, deep-chested dogs and becomes a medical emergency. To schedule an appointment for your new fur-babies, please contact the office at (304)472-0323!

⭐️ A Welcome to this week’s Pet of the Week, our very own, Rip! ⭐️

Rip was in today for his annual exam and vaccines with his mom, Dr. Lambert. He thankfully had a good check up today, which is great since his breed (French Bulldog) is known to struggle with skin allergies and ear infections, especially this time of year. Summer can be a hard time for dogs who are brachycephalic, “smushed faced,” so it is important to keep them cool when temperatures rise, as they are more prone to heat stroke. A good way to keep pets of any breed or species safe while it is hot is to take them for walks in the early morning or evenings when the day is coolest and to keep a close eye on them when they are outside. Do not let animals stay out for too long on hot days and make sure they have plenty of shade and fresh water. For more tricks to keep your pet happy and safe during the summer, stop by our office and check out our bulletin board that provides owners with hot weather tips!

Introducing something new!

Our office has decided we will be choosing a pet of the week and placing them in the spotlight on our Facebook. Winners will also be given their choice of a prize from our prize baskets featuring treats, toys, etc. In order for your pet to have a chance to be our next winner, please schedule an appointment at our office by calling (304)472-0323!

🌟Welcome our first pet of the week, Strawberry Festival royalty, Stark! 🌟

Stark has recently started receiving adequan injections to help with his arthritis pain. These injections help to reduce inflammation and build a cushion between bones that have lost that cushion through joint degeneration, which in turn can help with some of the pain associated with arthritis. At our office adequan injections start off once a week for one month, then decrease to every other week for one month, before remaining at a maintenance dose of once monthly. Stark’s dad reports that he has been doing great since starting injections and is able to go for his full walk again!
