Out of an abundance of caution we made the decision to evacuate all client and clinic horses from the property of the Buckeye Equestrian Center this afternoon as the winds picked up and the fire spread further east towards the clinic.

Thank you to all of our clients and community members that reached out today offering trailers and places to house the horses. It means the world and shows your dedication to not only your animals but others as well. Thank you to Kendra and Tyler Cormany, Sovereign Farms, and Fred and Michelle Merrick for jumping in to help evacuate and house horses.

We are hopeful the fire will remain contained to the riverbed and as of now plan to be open for normal business hours tomorrow, Monday May 4th.

We are aware of the fire burning below the property line near our facility. We are in direct communication with the Fire Marshal and emergency personnel. At this time, the fire is moving away from the facility, and there is no evacuation order in place. We have been told we will be notified immediately if conditions change.
The safety of our people and animals remains our top priority, and we will continue to provide updates as needed.

This week Durango Equine had the pleasure of hosting a group of 4th year Veterinary Students during their Advanced Equine Reproduction Elective. 👩🏻‍🏫

The students got to spend the day with Dr. Grady, experiencing what life as a private practice Equine Theriogenologist is like!

Durango Equine is proud to host students from schools all over the country during their clinical rotations. 🗺️ We enjoy teaching students about all areas of equine practice and helping them develop their clinical skills!

💡While some people use Thanksgiving as a marker to put up the Christmas lights, horse people use it to put up lights for their mares!

💡If you hope to breed your open or maiden mare in early spring next year, she needs to go under artificial lights. Mares started under lights by the first week of December will likely be cycling by mid February. Natural daylight must be supplemented with artificial lighting for a total of 16 hours of light each day. This can be accomplished with the use of automatic timers or Equilume light masks.

💡Mares not placed under artificial lights will typically start cycling naturally by mid-March.

💡The light must be bright enough to read a book in each corner of the stall. And no, more light is not better. Leaving the lights on all night will only disrupt your horse’s sleep pattern. 💤

📣As of Saturday morning 11/22, there are 3 confirmed cases of EHV-1 in Arizona. All three horses are asymptomatic (not sick) and were exposed at the WPRA finals and Elite Barrel Race Event. This information has been provided directly to Arizona veterinarians by the State Vet Office, and is available for reference on the Equine Disease Communication Center website (https://www.equinediseasecc.org).

💕We know this is a scary situation and we want to thank our clients for their understanding and flexibility as we too navigate the ever changing landscape of this outbreak.

📆The American Association of Equine Practitioners is putting on what is sure to be an informative webinar on EHV-1, on Tuesday 11/25. You must register for the event at the link below.

🫧We know cancelled plans are never fun or convenient, but we encourage everyone over the next week or two to stay home, stay safe, and maybe deep clean that tack you’ve been putting off cleaning.😉

In light of the current EHV-1 outbreak, the AAEP and the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) have organized a horse owner education webinar to bring you the most up to date information on this issue.

Next Tuesday, join specialists Lewis R. “Bud” Dinges (Texas Animal Health Commission Executive Director and Texas State Veterinarian), Dr. Krista Estell (AAEP/EDCC) and Dr. Katie Flynn (USEF) for an informative discussion about what EHV-1 is, how to recognize it, and most importantly, how to prevent its spread.

This webinar is FREE, but registration is required. Register here: https://events.zoom.us/ev/AnIoJrASj0vuX7Q_K87mKEjg5bxeMAkqp7fpSoOgVtVm_Zgo1g5m~AiiV7ZQ3bbmlEW2iSkeRTSAfMCYf2QhFMoprr7WRbM_MsiJRcBGT1oLj0Q

*PLEASE NOTE: the attendee limit for this session is capped at 1,000. However, all who register will be emailed a link to an on-demand recording that will become available 24 hours after the live session ends.

We are aware of the current EHV-1 concerns and are monitoring the situation very closely. As of this morning, there are NO CONFIRMED CASES OF EHV-1 IN ARIZONA.

We are advising our clients to keep their horses HOME until this outbreak passes.

If your horse has a history of travel and starts showing signs consistent with EHV-1 (Fever, lethargy, inappetence, progressing to neurologic signs) please call and an exam and testing can be scheduled.

Our vaccination program at Durango Equine does include a vaccine against EHV-1, however it is important to remember that there is no vaccine against the neurological form of EHV-1, as it is a mutation of the respiratory virus. The goal of vaccinating horses against EHV-1 is to provide protection against the virus and decrease the severity of symptoms the horse would experience if it were to come in contact with the virus.
