There have been a number of horses in Louisiana, New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma who have experienced weakness, recumbency and acute death with what appears to be Botulism. The common denominator is being fed alfalfa cubes produced in Colorado. Further investigation is ongoing. Currently, alfalfa cubes produced in Idaho or other parts of the US and Canada do not seem to be a problem. We'll keep you updated as we learn more.

We've seen an uptick in the number of colics recently. A number of them were impactions related to dehydration. With the recent hot weather some horses aren't drinking enough water. Adding electrolytes to their grain and supplying them with loose salt such as table salt can encourage them to drink more. Salt blocks are great but sometimes they don't or can't lick enough to supply their needs.
