RDY Hancocks Playgun “Alfie”

If you are looking for a ranch bred, willing and athletic young gelding, RDY Hancocks Playgun is the horse for you.

Alfie is a 3 year old buckskin gelding with the sweetest disposition, willingness to work, and eagerness to learn. Despite his registered name, Alfie is as sane as they come. He is responsive, willing, and eager to learn. This gelding is ready to go any direction. He walks, trots, and lopes willingly under saddle, with minimal effort from his rider, and stops off your seat nicely. He has ridden double on the trail, has had dogs run underneath him, and has been worked around other unruly horses (bucking broncs and misbehaving c**ts alike) without a care in the world. He is level headed, with a sweet personality, and does well both in a stall and in pasture. He has been exposed to cattle, goats, and kids. He will pony off of other horses and vehicles, and is perfectly comfortable in the herd. He is not overly pushy with herdmates, and is an easy keeper. He is currently barefoot, and stands well for the farrier. Alfie is being trained through the Downunder Horsemanship Intermediate Series, and has great ground manners. He lunges, changes direction, backs up, yields both his hindquarters and forequarters, and will pick you up off a fence. He rides comfortably in a smooth snaffle bit, and gives to both lateral and vertical pressure. Alfie would do well as a work or show horse, and will become a great partner to you with enough consistency. Intermediate to advanced riders only, as he is still quite young, however I have no doubt in my mind that as he matures he will be a trustworthy and safe gelding for the whole family.

2020 Buckskin AQHA Mare

This is a mare that lives up to her name. This Reminic granddaughter is quiet, handy, and always looking for the cows. She will ride happily through boggy fields, rocky hills, dirt trails, or in the arena. As a greenbroke 3 year old, she was shown in two ranch versatility shows, placing in one (although the real reason was to expose her to a new environment). More recently, she has been used to gather and move cows, and has been getting exposed to the basics of roping. This is a “tack up and go” kind of horse. She will jump in your trailer, with or without a saddle on, does not require groundwork, and is very low maintenance. She is an easy keeper, can go with or without shoes, and has never had any major injuries in the entire time we’ve had her (since she was a two year old). While this is a horse fit for an intermediate rider, she has also been used as a lesson horse for all ages and levels of experience. She will pony off of horses and moving vehicles alike. She is not wary of barking dogs, coyotes, goats, chickens, angry roosters, plastic bags, tarps, or chainsaws. (Yes, we have video proof of that last one.) She has thrived both in a stall or in a pasture. If turned out with other horses, she gets along with others well, but will also hold her own. Her ground manners are superb, she stands for the vet and farrier, ties anywhere, and leads like a well trained dog, never pulling, pushing, or crowding. Under saddle, she stops off your seat, will back up off leg pressure, and gives to the bit, laterally and vertically. She has a nice working trot, and a beautiful extended trot, both of which are easy to ride. Her lope is very comfortable, and she is sure-footed in all terrain. One of our favorite things about her is how easy it is to step up on her. From the ground, she stands still to be mounted from either side. If you are vertically challenged, lead her to a fence, stump, rock, mounting block, etc, climb up, face her, kiss or cluck a couple times, and she will put herself underneath you so you can swing a leg over with ease. She has never bucked, bolted, reared or kicked out. She has been ridden ba****ck, western, and english, with spurs and without. She has even been ridden double like as if it was normal. This young mare is a quality riding horse, and will no doubt produce foals of the same caliber for you, if bred.

Intermediate to advanced riders only, as he is still quite young, however I have no doubt in my mind that as he matures he will be a trustworthy and safe gelding for the whole family.

Ugh. I won’t lie, I’ve been sitting on this one for a while. This is not the post I ever wanted to make. A couple weeks ago I had my vet come out to look at Clementine’s front legs. I’m not a medical professional, but I knew something wasn’t right, and it hadn’t been getting better as she was growing. My vet took one look and agreed with me. We took some x-rays, and she gave me the diagnosis; Clementine has Degenerative Suspensory Ligament Desmitis (DSLD). There is no cure, and because she is only two and has not yet been ridden (or worked at all really), the only explanation for it is that it is genetic. Essentially this means that she probably will not be sound enough to show, and I cannot in good conscience continue her bloodline. It would be completely irresponsible. I do my best to make light of sh*tty things that happen in my life, but I can’t seem to make light of this one. All of the plans I had for this horse have been thrown out the window. I have cried, cursed, and wallowed in it for a while, but now I feel I’m ready to share her status with the world. I want to be very clear when I say this is not Epic Titan’s genes that caused this (nor will it deter me from breeding to him in the future). Upon talking to Penny’s owner about it, it sounds like it has shown up in her hind legs as well. There is no test for this disease. It is no one’s fault, it progresses at different speeds for different horses. Clementine’s just happened to show up early, and thank goodness it did before I bred her and carried on the genetics for this disease. At this point, my goal is to get her as comfortable as I can. If that means she won’t be able to be ridden, so be it. As of right now, she is not lame, so I’m not concerned about her quality of life at this time. I’m working with my vet and farrier to develop a plan of attack, but I am also open to suggestions. One of my biggest goals with my management of East Bay Equestrian is transparency. I strive to share the good, the bad, and the ugly. Unfortunately, this is just part of breeding, training, and owning horses. I hope I can find something positive about this whole situation soon, but until then it just really sucks. 🖤
