A potentially hazardous chemical has been detected in Oklahoma air for the first time. In fact, it’s something scientists say has never been found in North America before.

Researchers discovered medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) in northern Oklahoma. MCCPs are a man-made byproduct tied to industrial materials and manufacturing processes. Early findings suggest the compound could be linked to the land application of "sewage sludge" used as fertilizer.

Experts say there are still a lot of unknowns, including where it’s coming from and what it could mean for long-term health.
