Difficult time of year when grass stops growing and you need depend on transporters importing in quality hay (at $43 a bale- three string orchard/ $31 bale two string alfalfa/ $28 bale 2 string orchard). Some frost this morning with a low of 28 degrees and ice in buckets. Warmed up enough by late morning to remove blankets and give horses a chance to roll in the sand. 🥹
Featured is the yearling- soon to be 2 years old- wb filly and Major who is in his late 20s. He has no idea he is old- and runs around when the others decide to spook at nothing and get each other going. He's the babysitter and gets paid in several soft chew peppermints for his services. He comes out of the gate and immediately stops next to me for payment in full.

Thought these photos were cute of Squeaker and his little rider, at her first show. Super brave little rider jumping because pony has a big "jump".
First shows and schooling shows are meant to "teach" you- like going to regular school. This is where you go to learn the ropes and to build on your horsemanship knowledge/techniques; then you practice and come back to the next show to see your improvement (to be "judged") together with your horse. That's all it is. Nothing more. It's more for personal achievement and bonding with the horse, than for gaining any external reward. 😉 If you are lucky, long term friendships are made with similar minded people and you can grow together.
If you are really lucky- you will learn a lot more from just listening to the horse than you ever imagined. Blessed 🥰

October 5th show (weekend before Milton).
Ellemenno (pronounced L-M-N-O), aka "Squeaker" doing a Low Medal 2'3 round and qualifying for Medal Finals. A few little mistakes but very consistent in the round.

The little yearling filly got a new blanket for the upcoming cold nights and a new fly mask too. She looks styling in her little rubber duckies.
Hate to say it, but for what that cost- I could have bought myself several new winter jackets 😎
She will outgrow it by end of season, if not before then, and it will be passed down to Valiant.

Every person has a different version of beauty. It might be an antique car, a painting, a restored historic building or horses eating soaked hay in a pasture as the sun rises. 🙂 Unlikely friends in this picture, the shetland and the warmblood.
Take time to remind yourself of small beautiful things and always treat others fairly. Life is short. Do good things.

Squeaker's first year showing locally at 2'3 and he qualified for Medal Finals four days before Milton hit. I missed his classes because I was stocking up on gas and non perishables- before news 🌀 broke. But pony did his job without me cheerleading for him.
This is a huge deal for any pony- making it to Finals. I think Karisa is going to give away this honor of riding him in the Finals to a deserving kid. Will be interesting to see how this turns out. 🙏💜🐴 Will Squeaker do the Victory Gallop??

We finally have power so I can update anyone who has been concerned. It was not easy prepping a farm with two barns, 8 horses/ponies 2x in two weeks for major hurricanes. First Helene then Milton, with Milton being nothing short of evil. We did not get much notice as to where landfall would be or when. We boarded up the house, dismantled a portion of the barn to give them an exit if needed, dismantled chicken pens/houses, dug trenches, bought hay/grain/gas/etc. Filled up as many pasture buckets of water as we could because when power goes out we have no electricity for the well and only a small generator. The storm was intense and strong. It was slow moving, lasting 7+ hours with flooding rain and took down trees near the barn and crushed fencing. All in all, we did okay. Just tired and mentally need recover from storm ptsd. Karisa went into the barn during the hurricane to calm each horse down. I did not think the wood barns would hold up to 110 mph winds, but they did. Literally, during the hurricane she was outside when winds were high, which peaked my stress level to the max because she was out there for long time- big risk. We are not in need of anything, we are good. Neighbors helped each other. The ones with big generators gave us daily water for horses and a hot meal. We were able to cut up tree that fell near barn with help from neighbor. Still have many more down trees and fencing to fix. So many folks here are homeless and in need of aid in Florida just to get by. So many lost everything with flooding rain. It will take long time to build back better.

Some pictures from yesterday. Since the weather is cooling down and show season will be starting, we did HydroGel preventative maintenance on Farrah. Two injections, one in each coffin joint. She is 11 with some very mild arthritis showing on an image and we would like to keep her sound for a long time. This product is the best. Bleu watched from his stall.
