One of the biggest mistakes people make is getting in too much of a hurry before the horse is mentally ready. A horse fresh out of pasture may have a lot of energy, but the real goal is getting their mind focused and connected before you ever climb in the saddle.

In this session, we’re working with an older c**t that’s been started and stopped over the last few years. Before asking for anything under saddle, we spend time getting her attention, moving her feet, changing directions, and helping her think through the pressure instead of reacting to everything around her.

Good horsemanship starts with preparation. When you take the time to get a horse relaxed, attentive, and responsive on the ground first, you create a safer and more productive ride once you step into the saddle.

Everything we do with a horse is connected.

The groundwork, the joining up, the haltering, the lunging, the stopping, the backing. They are not separate tricks. They are building blocks that help create a willing partner.

When a horse starts to understand that you are fair, consistent, and clear, he begins to look at you differently. He is not just being held there. He is choosing to stay with you.

That is where feel and timing matter. If I ask a horse to back by pulling on his head, I may get the feet to move, but I am also likely to create brace. The head comes up, the body gets tight, and the horse starts protecting himself.

Instead, I want to direct the feet in a way that keeps him soft, respectful, and thinking. When he takes that step back without me laying a hand on him, I reward that try.

Good horsemanship is not about making one big thing happen. It is about stacking small, correct moments until the horse understands he can trust your leadership.

One of the biggest things that causes confusion for a horse is when a rider starts something and then backs off halfway through. That in-between place is where horses get unsure, resistant, or even reactive.

If you make a decision, commit to it. Even if it turns out to be the wrong decision, your horse is better off with a clear answer than a hesitant one. Horses learn from the release, but they also learn from the clarity of your direction.

When you stay consistent and follow through, your horse starts to trust that you mean what you say. That builds confidence on both sides. You can always adjust and refine after the fact, but in the moment, your job is to be clear and decisive.

Good horsemanship is not about being perfect. It is about being consistent, being fair, and giving your horse something they can understand and rely on.

Horses have a way of keeping a person honest. You can have a great ride one day where everything feels easy, and it is real tempting to think you have it all figured out. That is usually when a horse will step in and remind you there is still more to learn.

Confidence is important, but there is a fine line between confidence and getting a little ahead of yourself. Horses feel that change right away. When we stop paying attention to the details, our timing, our feel, or our awareness, that is when things start to slip.

Good horsemanship is about consistency. It is about showing up the same way every day and doing the little things right, even after a good ride. The goal is not just to have a good moment, but to build something reliable over time.

If you stay aware and keep your focus on clear communication and timing, your horse will meet you there. And on the days they do not, that is where the real learning happens.
