This hasn’t happened yet.
But a federal judge just overturned the 2023 New York law that made this kind of dumping illegal — reopening the door for radioactive discharge from the decommissioned Indian Point nuclear plant.

The water, stored since the 2011 Fukushima-era shutdown, was used to cool nuclear reactors. It’s been filtered to remove most contaminants — but still contains tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen that can’t be easily separated from water.

Officials say it’s “safe.”
But what does safe mean when you’re talking about something that lasts for decades, moves with tides, and touches every level of the ecosystem?

At KatsAquatics, we’ve always believed in understanding what affects aquatic life — not just in tanks, but in nature. When wild fish are already fighting pollution, microplastics, and rising temperatures, this kind of decision feels like one step too far.

Do you think this release should be allowed? Or should radioactive wastewater stay out of our waterways for good?

Fun fact, Pacific Aquarium was the first store to ever buy snails that I bred… more than 6 years ago! They provided a little door into the world of business and gave me the motivation needed to keep pushing, growing and developing!

Happy International Woman’s day!
I hope today every single woman is cherished, told she’s loved, appreciated, and respected even more than every other day.
But if you don’t get to hear that from a loved one today, let me be the one to say you’re beautiful, smart, and stronger than you think. You matter, and have great meaning in this world, even if it may not seem like it for a minute or two. Better yet, if today’s not your day, before you know it you will be one of the most important and loved people in someone’s life.
