Happy Halloween 🎃💀🍯

A lot of people miss this concept when training their dogs, the reward should come after the dog completes the job. Think of it like, “If you don’t work, you don’t get paid.” Make sure your dog understands what they’re being asked to do, then pay them once they’ve done it. That way, they learn that their behavior earned the reward. This matters if you ever want to fade treats out of your hand, your toys, or out of sight altogether. If you keep luring your dog through every behavior, they can get stuck following the food instead of understanding the job.

Some people love e-collars, some people don’t. I’m somewhere in the middle: every tool has its place. I’ll work with your dog with or without equipment, and I’ll explain the pros and cons so you can make an informed choice.

When I first got into dog training, I wasn’t a fan of e-collars based on what I’d read online. My perspective changed as I learned how to introduce and use them thoughtfully. This video shows the introductory conditioning process. It’s one part of the training, and it doesn’t represent every level or every way the tool may be used later on.

I’m sharing this to give you a clearer look at what the introduction can involve. E-collars aren’t the right fit for every dog or every owner, and I don’t recommend trying to use one without guidance from a qualified professional.

What do you think? Could an e-collar be the right tool for you and your dog? Let me know in the comments. 👇🏾🐾

Dog training has taken me to some pretty cool places, but experiences like this will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you to the Tobias family for trusting me with such an important task and allowing me to be a part of their special day. It was a beautiful wedding and an unforgettable experience. Thank you a million times over, being Poppy’s plus one was dope! 🐾💍❤️

Your dog is constantly deciding whether the reward is worth the effort. If you keep changing the paycheck, don’t be surprised when the work changes too.

People often ask if I want my dogs to be friendly. The answer is yes but only when I say it’s okay. A well trained dog doesn’t assume every person or every dog wants to interact. They learn to stay engaged with their owner until they’re given permission. In this video, another dog is running around just a few feet away. My dogs aren’t worried about it. They aren’t fixated on it. And when they’re released, they don’t run to the other dog, they run to their reward. That’s not because they don’t like other dogs. It’s because they’ve learned that impulse control comes before freedom. Neutrality isn’t about taking the fun away. It’s about giving your dog the ability to make good decisions, even when distractions are everywhere.

That’s what creates reliable off leash freedom. 💯
