Happy Wednesday!

Today, we’d like to introduce you to one of our veterinary receptionist extraordinaires!

✨Meet Kendel ✨

“I have been in the veterinary profession for over 17 years and am very lucky to be with the GSVH family for a little over a year! I love camping and boating with my family. I live in Wagoner and have several dogs, cats and even a pony! I love the holidays for family, friends, and all the good food get-togethers”.

🐾 Case of the Mondays 🐾

It’s never fun to hear your pet is diagnosed with a chronic disease, and some are more frustrating to treat than others! Diabetes in cats can definitely be quite the challenge for a pet owner and their pet, as well as the veterinarian managing the case.

“Andy” came to us in July last year when his owner noticed an increase in his urine output, water intake, and appetite. Dr. Wulf diagnosed him with Diabetes mellitus using inhouse lab work. Treatment options were discussed and Andy’s owner was not physically going to be able to treat him the traditional way — with insulin. We had a new drug on our shelf that we hadn’t tried before but Andy’s mom was willing to give it a try. Dr. Wulf started him on Senvelgo that same day; this medication is an oral liquid that is given once a day. No injections! The monitoring is quick and easy as well!

Andy has been an excellent patient and is thriving on Senvelgo. His clinical signs resolved within 2 weeks of treatment! He has lost some weight with a diet, and is back to getting into things on the counter tops. At our last check up, his blood sugar was 99 which is incredible! His owner is thrilled with his response!

We love seeing new therapies available to our patients that improve their (and their owner’s) quality of life! Yay, Andy!!

✨ We want you to get to know us better! Each month we will be highlighting members of our team. ✨

Hi! My name is Catherine! I’m a vet assistant and have been with GSVH for two years. I have two pets of my own; a dog (Rocky) and cat (Tommy), along with a little farm at home. I love to stay active; whether that is running, hiking, or even just baking in the kitchen. I always make time for traveling with friends and have a bucket list full of places I’d like to visit! For example, I’d love to visit Italy, Iceland and Hawaii! I really enjoy iced caramel lattes, spontaneous trips, national parks, photography, and paddle boarding.

🐾 Case of the Mondays 🐾

Let’s talk oral health in our patients. 🦷

Oral health is an essential component of your pets overall wellness which is why a yearly physical examination is warranted. Keep in mind that we are only seeing 20% of the tooth, as 80% is under the gum line!

The biggest issues we see is periodontal disease and fractured teeth. Periodontal disease is inflammation of the periodontium (tissue surrounding the tooth) and it starts with gingivitis (inflammation of the gums). If left untreated we often see bone loss and abcessation with draining tracts; these can be seen in the mouth or on the face leading to deeper infections and eventual loss of the tooth. Severe infections can make their way into the bloodstream and cause issues for the heart and other organs.

Prior to anesthesia, bloodwork will be done to evaluate organ function. Once the patient is under anesthesia, a more complete oral exam with be performed. Full mouth radiographs (x-rays) will be done to assess each tooth and the surrounding bone. Each tooth will be scaled with an ultrasonic scaler, polished to remove any scratches, and probed for any pockets or abnormalities.
We will go over any findings and discuss the appropriate treatment plan.

Remember, 80% of dogs over the age of three have some active dental disease. There are a variety of ways to help control tartar, such as daily brushing with dog/cat specific formulations as well as special chews and treats. You can visit the Veterinary Oral Health Council website for approved products!

✨Not all patients show signs of disease and discomfort but here are a few things to watch for: chattering teeth, discomfort in or around the mouth, dropping food or toys, pawing at the mouth, chewing on one side, or even excessive drooling. If you note one or more of these signs, be sure to call and make an appointment.

🐾 Case of the Mondays 🐾

Say Hi to Quint! He presented to Good Shepherd Veterinary Hospital for a dental cleaning. On preoperative bloodwork, he was found to have elevations in his liver enzymes. Prior to anesthesia, it’s important to figure out why there are abnormalities in the bloodwork! Dr. Hinck and our team further investigated through x-rays and ultrasound, ultimately discovering that Quint had a tumor on one of his liver lobes.

Prior to surgery, additional bloodwork was performed to assess the clotting factors as the liver plays a crucial role in producing these factors. This means we wanted to make sure he wouldn’t have an issue clotting. Dr. Hinck and Dr. Wulf performed surgery to remove the tumor. Thankfully, no additional tumors were found during surgery and Quint recovered well from his procedure!

Quint’s biopsy results revealed a diagnosis of a hepatocellular carcinoma, a malignant (cancerous) tumor. Thanks to the meticulous work of our team, clear margins were achieved, and Quint now has a good prognosis!

At his follow-up appointment last week, Quint’s parents were happy to report that he has been doing wonderfully! We will continue to monitor his liver health down the road with ultrasound and bloodwork!
