This precious boy gave us a scare last night. I was playing with Zeke and noted the white parts of his eyes were yellow. He had a moderate case of neonatal isoerythrolysis (🔻 details below). Thankfully he seems to be recovering without needing medical intervention. Thank God for a stroke of good luck! Please keep praying he makes a full recovery 🙏🙏
Neonatal Isoerythrolysis (NI) in foals occurs when mom's blood type is different from the foal. Typically mom has had another foal with the same blood type as the affected foal. Mom's immune system recognizes the other blood type as foreign and makes antibodies against it. Next foal with the "foreign" blood type recieves those antibodies from mom's colostrum, which triggers the foal's immune system to attack its own red blood cells. This can cause severe, life-threatening anemia within a few days.
When you're checking over your newborn foals, be sure to check for any yellow tinge the sclera (white part of the eye) and the mucus membranes. The yellow comes from release of hemoglobin as red blood cells are destroyed. Often this yellow color and a decrease in energy are the first signs. Severe cases need immediate medical attention to survive. 😥
Foals are born without any immune defenses. They absorb maternal antibodies from colostrum to protect them for the first few days, while their own immune systems mature. However, foals absorb colostrum for only 24 hours after birth - which is likely what has saved Zeke's life. The antibodies attacking his red blood cells, along with all the other protective antibodies Grace gave him, are removed from circulation as he builds his own immune system.
Zeke is less yellow today and his energy is improved. I'm hopeful he'll make a complete recovery within a few days. Then we'll be able to let him play with Kodi and the new c**t again!
