This horse was every farriers dream; 4 good hooves that just look perfect!
Here was the full process trim on a nice hind hoof that is so balanced it’s hard not to appreciate as a horse lover!

PART 2: SOLVING THIS LAMENESS
In this case the hoof had a lack of sole depth and showed signs of being a classic overtrim, which made this horse pretty tender!
OUR SOLUTION:
Since the goal was immediate relief to be able to perform, we paired a St. Croix SureFit shoe with a salad bowl modification and a leather pad to provide depth, balance, and sole pressure relief! We were happy with how this turned out, and how the horse immediately gave us his approval! 🤩👍🏻
Owner updated us by saying he feels like a brand new horse! We love seeing results speak for themselves!

PART 1: WHAT DO YOU THINK IS WRONG HERE??
This horse came in Grade 1-2 lame, vetted recently, shod last week, and came up lame. Brought to us hoping to be sound ASAP for a big event coming up!
What do you think this horse is indicating? Where do you think the source of this lameness is coming from?

This long hoof was sure due for a makeover!
-
Having long hooves can be a tricky fix for some horses. In horses such as this one, the first instinct is to cut back the whole hoof, which can easily lead to overtrimming the sole! On a long hoof, it is it important to watch your markers, and know exactly how much sole ACTUALLY needs to come off!

LETS TALK HOOF STANDS!
This has been a hot topic on our page lately! We personally use hoof stands for a couple reasons!

WHY USE A HOOF STAND?
Here are a couple examples of when a hoof stand is a useful tool to help keep a horse level headed and comfortable while trimming and shoeing. First up working on an older, arthritic horse that may not be comfortable holding up their hoof that long can comfortably rest on a stand!
Who said you can’t use a stand on a young green horse? We also showed how we use a stand on a yearling with limited handling, and how it helps keep them calm and relaxed, and knowing the farrier is a-okay to stand for!
Stands might not be for everyone, but we’re sure a fan!
Do you believe in using a hoof stand?

DOES MY HORSE NEED SHOES???
We get this question all the time!
-
If your horse is sound barefoot that’s the ideal scenario, but not all horses can handle it! In this case, this horse was sound, but maybe not performing at the top of their ability. Lee showed a couple indicators that this horse was needing shoes!
-
What are some signs that your barefoot horse may need shoes?
The #1 reason we put shoes on a horse without any particular issues is PROTECTION! When we’re asking a horse to perform, that doesn’t always mean it’s on the best ground. Hard tough ground can break up a hoof and make a horse sore!
Another reason could be traction! Different ground requires different grip to safely keep a horse sound and problem free!
-
In an ideal world, all horses could be barefoot! Do you believe that all horses are able to be barefoot comfortably? Do you think horses can perform barefoot at their best?

Our Story

A horseman at heart, Lee understands the whole horse. His love for horses began early, roping and training horses on his parents’ cattle and horse ranch in South Dakota from the time he could hold the reins. In 2007, he graduated from Western Dakota Tech, Rapid City, SD as an industrial electrician. He rodeoed, both amateur and professionally, for several years before becoming a farrier. He qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo three times and the Badlands Pro Rodeo Circuit Finals two times. He married Jamie (Lindsay) Olsen in 2008; she runs barrels, ropes, is a Nurse Practitioner. They moved to TX in 2010, and their son Trace was born in 2012.

Currently, Lee attends many of the biggest team ropings in Texas, Oklahoma City, OK and Las Vegas, NV. Roping is a family affair at the Olsen Ranch. He is grateful to be able to rope together with his wife, Jamie. Their son, Trace, loves roping, too.

As a AFA Certified Journeyman Farrier, Lee uses a variety of trusted methods to personalize care for each horse’s need. He works on some of the top performance horses in multiple disciplines. Additionally, he is the resident Therapeutic Farrier at Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery in Weatherford, Texas.

At Olsen Equine, continuing education is a priority, and is evident in Lee’s practice as well as his passion for educating horse owners. Lee is in constant pursuit of improving the quality of equine hoof care. He teaches shoeing and trimming clinics in various locations, and provides helpful resources for equipping horse owners to best care for their horses.
