Volte Farms has three great horses available for month-to-month on-farm leases. Both partial and full lease available.

The first is the beast that is Guinness. He is a 16'2" hand Shire/Hanoverian cross that in his early days evented through training level. He is now a dressage and flat horse only. He has competed through 2nd level dressage successfully and has tons of personality. He is a fun ride but not suited for a beginner.

The second horse is the beautiful BCW Coco Chanel. She is a 15'2" hand Friesian/TB cross who is an excellent teacher and stunning dressage horse. She has competed through 2nd level and is super trust-worthy. The better the rider the more she shines.

The third horse is actually a pony (but don't tell her that). Thumbelina is a beefy 13'1" who competed through novice eventing, but would love to show a confident kid or small adult the ropes in eventing. She is in her 20s now so should stick to starter and maybe BN with the right person.

Reach out for more details on any of these three awesome mounts. Show season is coming!

Merry Christmas 🎄 from all the ponies here at Volte.

Curious George

This is George. He is a good little monkey — and always very curious. But George is not a monkey—he’s a horse! He is a very tall warmblood-cross gelding, 16’2” hands to be exact. Much taller than a monkey ever could be.

George is seven years old and full of curiosity. He likes to sniff everything — the brushes, your pockets, even the dogs and cats. When he first came home in November 2023, he didn’t know very much at all. He would wear a halter and walk on a lead (if you could catch him), but that was it. Everything else was brand new.

George watched the other horses and thought, “I want to learn that too!” So he did. In the spring, he learned to walk, trot, and canter under saddle. The walk was easy. The trot was bouncy and fun. The canter—well, that one still takes some practice, but George is improving every day. His gaits are super smooth and so easy for his rider to sit too.

George likes to move forward and listens very carefully. Sometimes he hears a funny sound and will react — just to make sure everything is okay. He’s not scared, just curious.

He tried jumping once or twice and thought it was exciting. But he prefers keeping all four feet on the ground and will be an elegant dressage partner. He likes to show off his floaty trot and stretchy walk.

On the ground, George loves attention. He happily stands tied for grooming and loves being fussed over, though cross-ties are still a bit puzzling. He is excellent for the vet, and the farrier says George has decent manners, even if he wiggles his toes sometimes.

George is a big boy with big solid feet. What he really wants is an advanced, confident rider or trainer looking for a prospect who will keep teaching him new things—because Curious George loves to learn.

Every day is an adventure for George, and we can’t wait to see what he’ll discover next.

Fancy athletic mare with unlimited potential.

“Cozette” (Cat Lak) is a lovely 2016 16.1 OTTB mare with fantastic gaits, good mind and gallop/scope for the upper levels of Eventing. Correctly restarted, trained, and campaigned by professionals to novice level at recognized events in several different venues across multiple states. Cozette is intuitive, careful over fences, forward without being hot. She is super sweet, not mareish, and straightforward to handle on the ground with a conscientious handler. This mare is eager to please and thrives under a kind and confident rider - consistency & clarity are key! As persons experienced with TB’s can relate - she has a great work ethic and is all heart but beginners and timid riders need not apply. Cozette lives outside 24/7 and is good for the vet/farrier and is an easy traveler. Her ideal partner would be an advanced/confident AA/JR or young professional.

Beginner novice packer looking for his new person.

Ranahan Okie (Oakley) is a 2011 chestnut OTTB gelding standing 16.3h. Oakley is a very good boy with a giant heart and just wants to please his human. He has been lightly competed through Beginner Novice eventing, training level dressage and .85 jumpers. He is a nice, balanced mover that absolutely loves to jump and is incredibly honest and brave.

Oakley would benefit from a confident, quiet rider with some experience with ‘typical’ OTTBs to be competitive at Novice level and beyond. He is very safe, sensitive without being reactive, however he can have an anxious energy at times. He would make a fantastic AA/JR partner for lower level eventing or jumpers.

Oakley has good ground manners, no vices, and is good for the farrier and the vet. He is a good traveler and is the same horse at home or away. Oakley does require annual maintenance and a well-fitting saddle. Complete vet records available for serious buyers.

“Off the bit”

There’s endless energy expended in trying to make sure that horses are “on the bit.” So often, though, in those attempts, there’s a lot of pulling, a lot of heaviness, a lot of just about anything BUT lightness and self carriage, And sometimes the use of stronger bits.

Perhaps something I saw in a long ago clinic might shed some light on the topic, maybe not---

Anyway, the clinician said that she felt that while on the long road to true engagement, where the horse brings its hocks and stifles into play to lift as well as to push, with the bit being a sort of means of containment toward which to drive energy, that a good test is to have moments OFF the bit, to see if the horse continues to move in balance at least for a few strides or either gets stronger-faster, or plunges onto its forehand.

Her thought being that since a horse can trot and canter in balance WITHOUT a rider, the process of getting the horse to be able to do the same thing WITH a rider should not involve as much use of hands as so often becomes part of the training process.

I also remember another of her quotes, that the rider FILTERS energy out through the bit, rather than TRAPS the energy---

Training Tip Tuesday. Using ground poles and cavaletti is a an excellent way to help your horse engage their core, lift their backs and add cadence to their steps. Not to mention, it helps the horse to improve proprioception, balance and coordination. It will challenge the brain and the body making training more enjoyable for horse and rider.

In this exercise, we use bending lines to help improve the horse's lateral suppleness. The cavaletti here can be used help the horse lengthen or collect the stride depending on how you would like to challenge your horse.

It is imperative, however, that you position the poles at the appropriate distance for the gait that you will be working to allow the horse to be successful. Larger horses may require longer distances; where as, shorter horse may require a little shorter distance.

Walk poles - approximately 3 feet (3 to 4 heel to toe steps)
Trot poles - approximately 4 feet (4 to 5 heel to toe steps or 1 medium stride)
Canter poles - approximately 10 feet apart

Get creative and think about the movements that are required at your level. Once you have a good idea of what is needed, then you can create pole patterns like this one to help your horse develop the skills to perform at a certain level.
