Sometimes an incident happens in my shop that I really feel needs to get out to other pet owners. I have been a professional dog groomer now for over 3 years and have some of the best clients possible. Today I did a new clients dog and was very sad for the poor thing. First let me say the owner is well intention ed and this dog is in no way abused. This dog had an incredibly long coat and the owner had tried to keep it brushed out. However the coat was matted to the skin over much of the dog. I knew I needed to clip the coat off but it was so matted it was more like sheering a Lamb. As I worked I noticed the skin of the dog was very red and irritated under the mattes. This is not all that uncommon for a severely matted dog. I wanted to take this chance to educate pet owners on what happens to a dogs skin when this happens. The skin reddens and can actually form a sore. The dog then licks and itches at the spot and it becomes much worse. As a groomer I would much rather shave this dog down and allow the skin to breath and heal. Fortunately this owner was very happy that this was done and the dog now has a chance for healthy skin and coat. I also washed the dog with a nice gentle Aloe shampoo that should soothe his coat. Please owners bring your dog to a good groomer before it gets this far. It's so important for your pets health. Its so much easier on them and me when they are groomed and brushed out more often.
