Mosquitoes are back β and that means heartworm season is officially here in northern Utah.
Heartworm is a serious (and completely preventable) disease spread through mosquito bites. One bite from an infected mosquito is all it takes to start a problem that can take months to show up and is expensive and hard on your pet to treat.
Here's what you need to know:
πΎ Dogs are natural hosts β worms can grow up to 12 inches long and live in the heart and lungs
π± Cats can get it too, and often show no symptoms until it's a crisis
Prevention is simple β a monthly chewable pill, or an injection that lasts a whole year!
The best time to start? Before you see a single mosquito. By the time they're out in force, your pet should already be protected.
If your pet is new to heartworm prevention we do require starting with a simple, 10 minute blood test to check for existing heartworms, if your pet is negative we will give you the go ahead to start prevention!
