I put a small scoop of game bird starter and then a scoop of 200 to 500 mealworms in each container (see photo below). The night before feeding them off, a scoop out any dead beetles from the beetle bin and throw them in with any veggies that need tossed. The chickens love seeing ne every morning.

Mealworm Farming Week 3.5:

From now on, my updates will be going by Drawers, so it's easier for me to update.

Large Wide Drawers:
1.) Yellow Mealworm 4, currently empty.
2.) Pupae drawer, currently have roughly 50 pupae that I've pulled from the Large Mealworms to replenish my beetle supply. As it may be awhile before my Beetle person will start shipping again. They are in smaller circular food containers to separate out by date, so they are easier to transfer later.
3.) Feeder drawer, currently has 2 containers that I use to carry mealworms out to the chickens in. These guys will be fed off on the colder days around here for now.
4.) Yellow Nursery 1, there is a paper towel that was in with the beetles for 2 weeks, I can now see a ton of teenie tiny mealworms on that.
5.) Yellow Nursery 2, Beetle Bin is currently here, I scoop out any dead beetles daily, though that's only one or two.
6.) Yellow Nursery 3, currently empty.
7.) Yellow Mealworm 1, 8000 Tiny Mealworms from Rainbow Mealworms, they are just growing.
8.) Yellow Mealworm 2, these were the original 5000 Tiny mealworms from Rainbow Mealworms. They are getting big and just eating away.
9.) Yellow Mealworm 3, Currently empty (I had medium mealworms in here, but I fed them off, as many were dead anyways.) Prepped for 5000 Small Mealworms coming soon.

Small Tall Drawers:
1.) Dark Nursery 1: Large Yellow Mealworms roughly 2000, moved them over here to spread them out more.
2.) Dark Nursery 2: Large Yellow Mealworms, roughly 2000.

Those in the short drawers are all the standard yellow mealworms. Going to use to supplement the beetles and add in new bloodlines until our farm is full self sufficient. Going to let most pupate, but will only keep the best looking beetles. We got 250 of each size, so hopefully there are 4 different groups of bloodlines. Ordered an additional 250 of each size, to just add in new bloodlines. Trying to make sure I don't run out of beetles.

Update 3: 2300: heat pads are working and room is still open. Going to air everything out overnight (again) and turn humidifier back on tomorrow.

Update 2: 0400: humidity is finally down in the occupied drawers, however it is still high everywhere else. Leaving the room open longer tip continue to dry out. The heat pads were turned off, somehow, but now they are on and working.

Update 1: 0130: humidity is still a touch high in all of the drawers, so we still have the room open and humidifier off. Plugged in the 2 heat pads we currently need and turned them on. We will check again to see of they are working.

Mealworm Farming Day 16:

Oops... forgot to change the humidifier's settings last night, so came home to 92% humidity. Letting everything dry out, and then going to check the heat pads and see if they still work. Oops, note to self don't forget to set max humidity.

Beetles: We have somewhere around 500 now and going to keep that number for awhile.

Small Mealworms: No change.

Pupae: Pulled out all healthy looking beetles and moved them into the beetle bin. Everything else, dead beetles, unhealthy looking beetles, and all remaining pupae were fed to the chickens yesterday. Last update here.

Mealworm Farming End of Week 2:

Beetles: We have added about 40 new beetles to our collection, so probably have close to 500 again. They love their carrots and they are very active.

Small Mealworms: I removed all old water sources, which should have been done a little bit ago (they were starting to mold, though it didn't spread). Added in fresh new carrots, and scooped some to the Seramas.

Pupae: We have removed several that have turned into beetles, the ones that looked healthy were moved into Yellow Nursery 1, with the rest of the beetles. The ones that were unhealthy looking or were dead, were placed in a bin with the rest of the dead beetles and will be fed off tomorrow. We also pulled out several pupae that didn't survive. We also added a carrot to the side of the drawer, so any beetles could get some fluids.

The time it takes from eggs hatching to pupae is somewhere around 3 to 5 months for yellows and hybrids, and 5 to 7 months for darks. Rotating every 3 weeks, these drawers will allow just over 5 months for the yellows and hybrids and just under 7 months for the darks to pupate. After all drawers are filled, when it's time to rotate again, everything in the last drawer (Dark 8, Yellow 6, and Hybrid 6) will be sifted for frass, and moved into the feeder drawer. The beetles of each version will rotate between their respective Nursery Drawers. I will start sifting frass once they hit the Mealworm drawers, this should allow them enough time to grow so that they won't go through the sifter. As always, everything is subject to change 🤣.
