Hello clients and fellow horse enthusiasts,
As many are aware, there is an outbreak of Equine Herpesvirus (EHV) originating from a WPRA event in Waco, Texas. There is a high incidence of the development of the neurologic form, Equine Herpesvirus myeloencephalitis (EHM) associated with this outbreak. While the situation is certainly disconcerting to see unfold, the good news is that so far there have been no confirmed cases in Michigan. At this time, we recommend booster flu/rhino vaccinations if it has been over 6 months since your horses were last vaccinated for flu/rhino. Flu/rhino vaccines are vaccinating for equine influenza virus (EIV) and EHV 1 and 4. In addition, it is important as always to practice good biosecurity when traveling to events, attending group rides or new horses are coming onto your property. Avoid allowing horses to touch noses or share feed/water buckets. Wash hands before and after handling horses from different barns. If you are going to different barns within the same area, consider changing clothes and shoes between barns. New horses should be quarantined for at least two weeks after arrival. If any horses on your property show signs of illness, please contact us for evaluation. Keep sick horses separated from others and always handle them last (feed, water, clean stall, etc.).
Here are a couple good resources for information on EHV, EHM and biosecurity to refer to:
