🚨 COMMUNITY ALERT: 2 Red-Eared Slider Turtles Illegally Dumped in Topaz Lake 🚨

We need your help, Mono County! Over Memorial Day weekend, two non-native Red-Eared Slider turtles were reported to be dumped into Topaz Lake.
If you are out near the lake and spot these turtles, please attempt to safely contain them (a tall plastic bin or bucket works great) and contact Mono County Animal Services immediately at (760)965-9606 or (760)932-7407 for pickup.

Here is why this is a serious issue for our community and our local ecosystem:

🐢 They Are an Invasive Species: Red-Eared Sliders are not native to our beautiful Eastern Sierra waters. They are highly aggressive competitors and will easily outcompete local wildlife for food, nesting sites, and basking spots, disrupting the fragile balance of Topaz Lake.

🛑 Dumping Animals is Illegal: Intentionally releasing a pet into the wild isn't just irresponsible—it is punishable by law under California Penal Code 597s as a misdemeanor, carrying heavy fines and potential jail time.

💔 It is Inhumane: Captive-bred pets do not have the natural survival instincts to handle our climate, native predators, or specialized ecosystems. Releasing them into the wild is not "giving them freedom"—it is exposing them to starvation, disease, and a slow, cruel death.

We understand that circumstances change and taking care of a pet can become overwhelming. **Please do not resort to abandonment.**
If you or someone you know has an animal they can no longer care for, reach out to us directly. We will work with you, no questions asked, to assist with safe, legal rehoming and placement.

Let's keep Topaz Lake beautiful, balanced, and safe for our native wildlife. Please share this post to spread the word! 🌲💧

🚨 BIG DOG. BIG HEART. BIG HUGS. 🚨

Meet Zeus, a roughly 1-year-old hound/shepherd mix with long legs, a goofy grin, and absolutely zero understanding of personal space. 💙

This handsome bilingual boy found himself at the shelter due to housing restrictions, not because he did anything wrong. In fact, by all accounts, Zeus has been a very loved family dog who grew up around children and reportedly did well around friends’ and family members’ dogs.

Now that he’s settling into shelter life, we’re getting to know his personality more every day — and so far, Zeus has made quite the impression.

Here’s what we’ve learned so far:
🐾 Zeus is what we professionally refer to as a “front-leg hugger.”
This boy does not believe in strangers. If you meet him, congratulations, you are now family and may receive an enthusiastic standing hug. We are actively working on manners and polite greetings, but due to his large size and excitement level, he could accidentally knock over smaller kiddos while attempting to distribute his love.

🐾 He’s bilingual.
Yes, this handsome gentleman understands Spanish commands, proving once again that shelter dogs are out here making the rest of us feel underachieved.

🐾 Shelter chaos? Doesn’t faze him.
Despite being surrounded by loud canine neighbors, Zues has remained relaxed, friendly, and unbothered. He seems to have an easygoing personality and has adjusted to the shelter environment surprisingly well.

🐾 Tug-of-war is LIFE.
Rope toys? Amazing. Running around the yard? Fantastic. Playing tug like it’s an Olympic sport? Absolutely mandatory. This boy is playful, energetic, and would love an active home that can help channel all that enthusiasm into fun adventures and continued training.

🐾 We’re still learning about him.
Dog-to-dog introductions will be happening soon, so stay tuned for updates. His previous family reported he did well with other dogs, and we look forward to learning more ourselves.

Zeus is still young, still learning, and still figuring out that not every human wants a full chest-to-chest embrace immediately upon meeting him. But underneath the excitement is a genuinely sweet, social, eager-to-please dog who simply needs consistency, structure, exercise, and positive reinforcement to become an incredible companion.

Dogs like Zeus are the reason we constantly remind people that “good dogs” still end up in shelters every single day through no fault of their own. If you’re looking for a loyal adventure buddy, professional tug-of-war competitor, bilingual best friend, and occasional personal space violator… Zeus may just be your guy. 🐶💙

Update: All kittens have been adopted!

🐾 KITTEN SEASON IS IN FULL SWING 🐾
…and the tiny chaos gremlins are officially ready for adoption! 🐱✨

We currently have SIX adorable kittens available between the Whitmore and Bridgeport Animal Shelters — 3 kittens at each location, all approximately 9 weeks old and ready to find their forever homes.

These little fuzzballs may be small, but they come fully equipped with:
✔️ Endless zoomies
✔️ Questionable climbing decisions
✔️ 3am parkour practice
✔️ Professional biscuit-making skills
✔️ Unlimited entertainment value

All kittens are:
💉 Vaccinated
📍 Microchipped
🏡 Ready for adoption

Adoption fee: $41
❗️Additional Spay/Neuter Waiver Fee: $30 ❗️

The waiver fee is fully reimbursed once the kitten is spayed/neutered and proof from a veterinarian is provided. This helps ensure these babies grow into healthy, responsible members of the feline community.

These kittens have been raised in loving foster homes since arriving as neonatals, giving them the very best start possible. Bottle babies require around-the-clock care, patience, and dedication, and we are incredibly grateful to our foster families for opening their hearts and homes to these tiny troublemakers. ❤️
Fosters are truly a vital lifeline to our lifesaving efforts. Without their support, we simply could not save as many vulnerable animals as we do.

Now these kittens are ready for the next chapter:
🏡 Forever homes
🛋 Cozy couches
🧶 Toy mice destruction
❤️ And humans to lovingly supervise their daily nonsense

If you’re interested in adopting, please contact either shelter to inquire about available kittens!

Warning: Side effects of kitten adoption may include laughter, missing hair ties, interrupted sleep, and complete emotional attachment within 24 hours.

Update: Loka has been adopted!!!

Meet Miss Loka — an 8-month-old domestic short hair with a BIG personality, a lot to say, and absolutely zero inside thoughts.

Loka is officially ready to find her forever home! She is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, and fully prepared to pack her imaginary little suitcase and move into your heart permanently.

Now let’s talk about what truly makes Loka special… her vocals.
Every morning while staff are moving dogs outside and walking past the cat room, we greet her with our now traditional chant:
“LET ME HEAR YOU SAY WAYOOHH!”
Without fail, Loka belts back her very best:
✨ “WAYOOHHH!” ✨
And honestly? It is the emotional support we didn’t know we needed.

This cat will hold full conversations with staff throughout the day. Need someone to gossip with while making coffee? Loka’s available. Want commentary while cleaning the house? She’s got you covered. Feeling lonely? Loka will gladly scream sweet little opinions at you from across the room.

She is affectionate, hilarious, social, and has quickly become one of the shelter favorites because she keeps everyone laughing. You truly never know what sound is going to come out of this tiny cat next, but you can guarantee she’ll have something important to say about it.
We imagine Loka thriving in a home where her future family appreciates:
🐾 Constant companionship
🐾 Daily conversations
🐾 Random “WAYOOHH” performances
🐾 Being lovingly judged by a tiny furry supervisor
🐾 A cat with the confidence of a stadium rock star

Loka is more than just adorable — she’s pure entertainment wrapped in whiskers.
If you’ve been looking for a cat with personality, humor, affection, and the vocal range of a tiny opera singer who exclusively performs “WAYOOHH,” this is your girl. ❤️
