You've heard me stress a bazillion times over and over DON'T give more than one shot at a time! Especially to those under 1 year old. Here's more reason and some great ideas. Please read.
Let’s Talk Vaccine Reactions!
(Yes, it’s a long one — but please read if you love your kittens.)
Yesterday, I went through something I hope none of you ever have to. If you’ve adopted a kitten from me, you already know how much I stress: one vaccine at a time, spaced out, and absolutely NO Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) vaccine. Well, I’m adding more to that list.
👉 New advice:
• Schedule vaccines early in the day, so if there’s a reaction, you have time to get to your regular vet — not the emergency clinic (which is much more expensive).
• Always keep plain Benadryl on hand (liquid or tablets — NOT children’s formulas).
Now to the situation…
My sweet boy Kaden received his 2nd FVRCP vaccine around 2pm. By 4:30, he was vomiting and had diarrhea. As always, I gave Rebalancer by Adored Beast with the vaccine — it helps the body detox and may help prevent reactions.
Then things escalated — foaming at the mouth, drooling, facial swelling, and he couldn’t open his mouth. He was having a serious anaphylactic reaction.
As a nurse, I immediately recognized the signs and knew this was urgent. We got in the car and headed straight to the emergency vet — over an hour away. I’m so grateful to my husband, who had just finished a long shift but drove us without hesitation. He knew I needed to focus fully on Kaden.
The first thing the ER vet asked?
“Did he receive the Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) vaccine?”
(Not a chance — that’s a hard no here.)
The vet also reminded me: reactions can happen with ANY vaccine, not just the first dose. It all depends on how the immune system reacts that day.
Kaden was given Benadryl, steroids, and nausea medication. He’ll stay on Benadryl every 8 hours for the next two days because reactions can come in waves. 😞
I truly believe that if he hadn’t had Rebalancer onboard, the outcome might’ve been very different.
So please — take this to heart:
✔️ Vaccinate early in the day
✔️ Space out vaccines
✔️ NEVER give the FeLV vaccine
✔️ Keep Benadryl on hand

I’m beyond thankful my beautiful boy is still here. Hug your kitties extra tight tonight and always trust your instincts. 💙
