Now that Maverick the Retired BVC Clinic Kitty has your attention, Happy International Cat Day! He woke his staff up this morning proving that his lungs are working better than ever. After breaking his fast with his Fancy Feast (because Friskies is SO beneath him now), he demanded that his home staff notify his clinic staff to spread the word that today is International Cat Day and that all cats should be pampered and treated like royalty today. This is one of the rare occasions we agree with the demands of this tiny tyrant!

So, Happy International Cat Day to all of our favorite felines out there. We hope that you are pampered and loved in all the ways you deem appropriate, whether it's being loved from afar with treats, or snuggled up with your favorite being with treats!

Show us all the pretty kitties you're celebrating today in the comments ⬇

*INJURED CAT FOUND IN HOLDEN, HAS BEEN HUMANELY EUTHANIZED DUE TO RAPID DECLINE*

A member of Holden PD brought in a cat that they suspected was hit by a car and was dragging its hind end on the side of the road near G&M Variety. The cat was an intact male shorthair estimated to be young (2-3 years old). He was a gray/white tiger and was wearing a purple flea collar. Our team examined him under sedation and had made the decision to humanely euthanize due to his symptoms and how quickly he was declining.

We suspect that he has an owner somewhere, given the purple flea collar, and we would like to find his owner. Because of his symptoms and rapid decline, we did not want this cat to continue to suffer while we attempted to locate an owner and it was not a decision our team made lightly.

We have included photos of this kitty in our post. When these photos were taken, he was still alive, but heavily sedated. The photos of the kitty are not graphic or gruesome, but we know that they can be upsetting, so we put a spoiler shield up in case you would not like to view them as a courtesy. Please keep in mind that all patients who are sedated have lubricant drops in their eyes, so the kitty is not "crying" in these photos.

If you believe this may be your cat, please reach out to our clinic by phone at 207-989-6531. We will hold him at our clinic until next week so we can hopefully find this cat's owner 💔🐾🌈

Without even looking at the calendar, most of us know that we're in the end of July and early August because that's when the Maine summer truly shows up. When the mercury rises as high as it's been the last few days, many of us flock to the nearest ice cream stand. Ice cream stands often have "pup cups" that our dogs love, but it can be risky without knowing exactly what ingredients are used to make those treats.

We're seeing more ice creams contain xylitol, an artificial sweetener that is very toxic to dogs. Ice creams can also contain macadamia nuts and chocolate, which are also toxic. Dairy can also be problematic for pets and cause GI upset, so we recommend giving it on occasion as long as your pet is able to tolerate it.

So what can you do to make sure your pet can also partake in some frozen deliciousness on those wicked hot days? You can:

🍌 -give them frozen green beans, bananas, blueberries, or strawberries. You can even puree these and turn them into an ice cream by adding plain Greek yogurt.
🥜 -stuff a Kong toy with peanut-butter and mini-Milk Bones and freeze it. This is a great treat that will keep your pet occupied for a while.
🍗 -take low or no sodium chicken broth mixed with some water and pour it into an ice cube tray to freeze. This is a great treat for cats in the summer since our feline friends don't tend to drink enough water!
🍓 -make frozen PB&J bites by mixing pureed strawberries, plain Greek yogurt, and peanut butter into an ice cube tray or other silicone mold and freezing it.

Whatever treats you make for your pets, check and check again for any ingredients such as xylitol which can be found in peanut butters and some dairy products. Of course, like with any treat, it is a *treat* and moderation is important!

Whoever said work has to be all work without a little bit of play (and pizza) is totally incorrect! I think Alex and Dr. Brainard agree 😂

Happy Friday, everyone! Hope your weekend is lots of fun!

We're sad to report that we had a good Samaritan bring in a deceased cat that was found in the Jeff's Catering area of Brewer. The cat was a male longhair gray/brown tabby with a white chest and paws. He was not neutered. It's difficult to determine this cat's age, but he was also very skinny. No microchip was located after BVC scanned him for one.

If you think this may have been your cat, please contact the front desk at 207-989-6531. We will hold him here for the next week in case his owner is found.

Whew, it's a hot one out there! 🥵 It's a perfect day to stay inside where it's cool! If I can't be near a body of water on days like today, one of my favorite ways to beat the heat and take it a little sloooowww is by watching a movie!

Since a nice cool movie theater is on our brains today, we want to know - what's your favorite pet-themed movie? Bonus points if you share your favorite movie treat with us too... for research purposes, of course 😹

We think that all members of the BVC Team deserve medals, but this weekend, we had one of our own winning medals for real! Our very own LVT, Andie, and her super dog, Chunk, took part in a dock diving competition in Newry over the weekend!

Over the course of two days, Chunk competed against some big caliber talent. On Saturday, he jumped his personal best at 13'6, and Sunday he BEAT his personal best by a whole foot at 14'7! His personal best on Sunday earned Chunk a 1st Place medal and catapulted him into the finals. Chunk ended up finishing the weekend 6th overall!

Chunk looks like he had such a great weekend. On top of his medals, he got plenty of "Good boys," attention, and even got to jump on the bed with Mom at the hotel 😂

We're so proud of you, Chunk! And of Andie, too!

We hope you have all have had a safe and happy 4th of July!

BVC was closed today to allow our staff to celebrate, and as a reminder, we will also be closed tomorrow, July 5th. If your pet needs immediate emergency care, please contact Eastern Maine Emergency Veterinary Clinic at 207-989-6267. Keep in mind that this is the busy season and they service a large portion of the state, so wait time may be long or they might have to refer you to a larger capacity clinic in southern Maine. Please be kind and courteous to staff too!

It's very, very rare that we share memes on this page, but this one really resonates with us, mostly because it's an accurate way of describing most dogs' reaction to fireworks if you've ever witnessed it. Fans of 'The Office' will likely remember this particular scene and describe it as complete chaos (though incredibly funny as well).

But there's nothing funny about seeing a dog or any pet be fearful of fireworks. They're very loud and overstimulating and animals just have no idea what is happening when those thunderous booms start. More pets go missing on around the 4th of July than any other time of year.

There are ways to celebrate the 4th and make your pets happy. See our list below:

🏠 Leave your pet at home. If you're going somewhere you know there will be fireworks, it might be best to leave them at home. That way if they do happen to run, they're at least in a familiar spot.
🚲 Make sure they get plenty of exercise throughout the day. Tiring them out before the evening will help them be restful and sleepy when the fireworks start.
🛏 Provide a safe space for them to retreat to with their own bed. Close off a room with blackout curtains that also has something that can drown out the noise such as a noise machine, radio, TV, or AC.
🥜 Provide them with a high-reward treat if dietary restrictions allow. A Kong filled with peanut butter and frozen for a few hours is a perfect distraction (just make sure the peanut butter *doesn't* have xylitol).
📱 If your pet is microchipped, make sure all necessary information with your microchip company is up to date in case they do happen to get out. Make sure that they have their collar with an ID tag on it, even if it's their rabies tag. We have reunited owners with their dogs just through their rabies tag in the past.
💊 Remember to medicate your pet if they take medications specifically for fireworks and/or thunderstorms. If you think your pet might need them to help with their fireworks phobia, please call us to set up an appointment to discuss with our team.

We hope that by following these tips, it'll make the 4th of July be a little calmer than poor old 'Nard Dog's day as seen in the picture below!

Our Story

Brewer Veterinary Clinic is a small animal clinic who has been deeply rooted in the greater Bangor/Brewer community for over 40 years. Founded in 1979 by Dr. Robert Feher, his dedication to his patients and veterinary medicine has grown our practice to a very busy five doctor clinic with an incredibly tight-knit, hardworking, and compassionate staff. We may have started from humble beginnings, but BVC underwent an extensive renovation in 2016 to accommodate our ever-growing client base and to offer the latest services in veterinary medicine. From your first hello to your last goodbye, our BVC staff is focused on every part of your pet’s health and well-being, from yearly preventative visits to surgery, to behavior consults and nutrition, and diagnostics to dentistry. We are also closely connected with the best specialists and referral hospitals in the New England area.

We actively encourage pet parents to be involved in their pet’s treatment plans and care through open communication and reliable information from our staff. We believe that no matter the reason, pets and their owners are deserving of quality care that remains within an individual’s budget and lifestyle. We believe that veterinary medicine is so much more than just practicing medicine, but building relationships with our clients and their pets within our community and beyond through respect, compassion, and education. BVC has even taken these beliefs and passions to an international level by traveling as a team to the Dominican Republic and Honduras to educate pet owners and provide medical care to their dogs and cats in small village communities. Every pet, no matter where they come from, is revered as one of our own during their care with our devoted staff. Pets are family, and at BVC, we treat them that way!
