🌸🌸 BVC Spring Pet Spotlight 🌸🌸

BVC Fans, meet Peter Plotthound! Peter and his parents, Alissa and Mike, were the first to complete the BVC Spring Bingo contest we launched a few weeks ago, so now we get to give this *amazing* pup a shoutout!

Peter Plotthound is a favorite of ours who hails from Georgia but made his way up to Maine through the New England Lab Rescue. Peter is, you guessed it, a Plotthound, the breed that is recognized as the official state dog in North Carolina. (Apparently they still hold a Plott Fest in North Carolina every year. A festival to celebrate these silly, goofy, and lovable hounds? Sign US up!)

Mom reports that Peter's favorite hobbies are "helping" in the kitchen, hiking, and camping. He may have been born a southern gent, but Peter is also incredibly well traveled. In fact, he's traveled to every state in the lower 48 except for Rhode Island (to be visited soon!), and has dipped his toe beans into the Atlantic, Pacific, and the Gulf! All we gotta say is when's the next adventure with Peter and can we come, too?!

We love when this guy comes in to visit us, but we love seeing Peter in his "natural" habitat more through all the awesome photos his parents share with us. Peter is truly one super cool dude!

If you would like your pet to get a BVC Spring Pet Spotlight shoutout, all you have to do is go to our Spring BINGO post to find out more!

Happy Star Wars Day to all who celebrate!

Since Maverick the Retired BVC Clinic Kitty's retirement, he has been exposed to a *lot* of Star Wars in his new home. While his at-home staff are particularly fond of the The Mandalorian and Rogue One, Maverick's favorite story from the Star Wars universe seems to be The Empire Strikes Back.... we think he tends to lean a little into the Dark Side, so it checks out 🫣

Do you and your pet have a favorite Star Wars story or character? Share them with us in the comments!

It's World Veterinary Day! Every year on the last Saturday of April, veterinarians around the world are celebrated for their care, compassion, and hard work put in each day with the shared goal of improving the lives of animals and making sure they're happy and healthy.

It takes a lot of hard work and dedication for vets to gain their knowledge and experience before earning their degrees, and that hard work doesn't stop when they graduate. We have been truly lucky to have some amazing veterinarians on our staff, past and present, and we could not possibly thank them enough for all the care, long hours, research, late nights, and head scratches that they have done over the years.

If you have a great memory with any of the veterinarians from Brewer Vet who made an impact on your or your pet's life, please share them with us below! They deserve all the kudos today!

Spring has announced her arrival with April showers showering, spring peepers peeping, and porcupine quills quillin'! Quill dogs are a sure sign of spring here at your local veterinary clinic(s).

As we head into the weekend, we'd like to refresh folks about porcupine quills and what to do (and NOT do) if your pup happens to come across a porcupine who doesn't want to play.

🦔 Porcupines are nocturnal animals and are most active between dusk and dawn. We recommend keeping your dog on a leash between those times, especially if you know there may be a porcupine in the area. It can take up to 2 weeks for a porcupine to move on to another area.
🦔 Porcupines cannot "shoot" their quills, but will turn their backs to expose their hardest quills on their behinds when threatened and thrash with their tails, striking and embedding quills into the closest threat.
🦔 Quills are made of keratin, which is what our fingernails are made of. Porcupines have quills all over their bodies varying in length and hardness except for their stomachs. Just like fingernails, quills will soften when exposed to any moisture (like muscle tissue, blood, and skin) and can become difficult or impossible to find. This makes removing them infinitely more difficult.
🦔 Quills have barbs on the ends (similar to a fish hook) that make it very easy for the quills to embed in skin, but difficult and painful to remove. Most dogs won't tolerate more than a few quills being pulled without sedation, and quills do have the ability to become infected or migrate to other locations once they are soft and under the skin.
🦔 Quills in the chest or abdomen are a life threatening emergency since quills can migrate and puncture vital organs. Seek veterinary care immediately!
🦔 Despite the old wives tales, cutting the quills does not "depressurize" them or make them easier to remove; it makes them more likely to break or splinter during removal which makes our jobs harder and your vet bill more expensive!
🦔 We *strongly* suggest not trying to remove quills yourself - it's painful for your pup and, yes, even your dog will bite you or anyone else if they're in a lot of pain.

If your dog is quilled by a porcupine, call a local veterinarian immediately. Waiting to have the quills removed not only results in unnecessary pain for your dog, but it also makes removing the quills more difficult, more expensive, and leaves more chances for serious complications after being quilled.

There's a lot of bad information on the Internet, including some that has been spotted in local social media groups, on the best ways to handle porcupine quills. We cannot tell you what or who to believe, but we can provide you with the best information based off knowledge and, most importantly, experience. When it comes to porcupine quills, please listen to the professionals who sometimes see quill dogs on a daily basis!

☠☠☠ LILIES KILL CATS!!! ☠☠☠

It's our annual re-share of this graphic as we head into Easter weekend and spring, and each year, your local veterinary teams are treating cats for lily toxicity cases. Cat owners bringing a bit of spring into their homes are unaware of just how deadly lilies can be, although in recent years we are seeing more flower shops and nurseries with signs that warn potential buyers!

We cannot stress this enough: ALL parts of the lily are toxic, petals, stem, pollen... even the water they're sitting in. Any flower in the lily family is considered toxic, and Easter lilies are often the culprit of these cases with how popular they are in the spring. The toxin works quickly and can cause major organ failure within 24 hours or less. We've unfortunately seen some heartbreaking outcomes because care was not received by the cat in a timely manner.

If you have cats, please refrain from bringing bouquets with lilies in them into your home, or if you do, make sure they're kept in an area that your cats do not have access to.

If you suspect your cat may have ingested *any* part of a lily, call your veterinarian immediately - do NOT "wait and see" if symptoms develop. You should also be in contact with a Pet Poison Control as they will give your veterinary team the best plan for your pet's treatment. They are the expert veterinarians when it comes to toxicity cases and every patient/circumstance is different. They will give our team the best and up to date comprehensive plan for treatment and ensure your pet has the best chance of going home with you recovered.

If you’ve been hoping for more grooming services being offered by Brewer Veterinary Clinic, all we have to say is… you’re in luck! We are proud to announce the addition of a whole list of new services thanks to the revolutionary and mostly safe Scritch Scratch Supersud 9000!

“Hey Brewer Vet social media spokesperson, what exactly is the Scritch Scratch Supersud 9000?” you might ask.

Well, lemme tell you! It’s a shampooer. It’s a nail trimmer. It’s an a**l gland expressor. It’s a spa treatment giver…er. It’s all kinds of things we don’t even know yet (our team is still reading the 4000 page manual it came with, but we’ll keep you updated). We may have had to knock out a few walls to get this baby set up, but it’ll be worth the construction dust and sacrifice of the break room (and several others) in no time!

“Hey Brewer Vet social media spokesperson, how does the Scritch Scratch Supersud 9000 work?”

First, you bring your pet in and choose services from a menu that stretches a good mile and a half. Once you and your pet customize their spa treatment routine, our staff will press a couple buttons, pull a few levers, say a prayer, and assist with putting your pet on the SS Supersud 9000 conveyor belt and away they go! Treatments are entirely hands free, unless you count the robotic arms as hands and then it’s just done entirely by robotic arms with cartoonishly large white gloves.

Every Scritch Scratch Supersud 9000 comes equipped with a viewing window to the inside of the machine so pet owners can see the mechanical wonder and magical transformation in front of their very own eyes.

“Hey Brewer Vet social media spokesperson, what sorts of treatments are available with this new Scritch Scratch Supersud 9000?”

We’re so glad you asked! Some of the most popular treatments are:

🦨 Skunk super soak & spin - best for pets who have been absolutely blasted by a skunk. Your pet will enjoy a nice long soak before entering the spin cycle to make sure all those skunk oils are gone for good.
💅 Mum & Me mani/pedi - if pet owners are feeling brave and want to join their pets for their treatments, this is the treatment for you! ***Disclaimer*** Machines have been calibrated for animal manis, so we cannot guarantee the accuracy of the robotic arms when treating human hands and feet.
🫳 Tick pickers - pick all them ticks!
👌 Flea flickers - flick all them fleas!
💨 Express a**l gland expression - the super quick and sorta painless a**l gland expression for the pet parents on a time crunch that no pet *ever* asked for.
🦟 Maine bog mud wrap - for the dogs that just want to marinate in that sweet, stinky, springtime bog mud without having to hunt for it and the pet owners who don’t want it smeared all over their back seat.
✂ Brazilian blow out - who says high end salon treatments are just for humans? Your dog and/or cat wants to feel beautiful too!
🎸 Mullet mut cuts - you’ve heard of the lion cut or the poodle cut, but what if your dog (or cat) wants to be all business in the front and party in the back? Your pet can be looking like their favorite 80s hair band singer or early 90s hockey player in no time.

These are just a few of the many treatments available with the Scritch Scratch Supersud 9000 and the possibilities truly do seem endless!

Give us a call today to book your pet’s appointment - basic packages begin at only $19.95!

But wait, there’s more!!!

Each pet will also be serenaded by an AI-generated cover of “Splish Splash” by Bobby Darin, only with the lyrics changed to “Scritch Scratch” FREE OF CHARGE! It begins playing the second your pet’s little t**h hits the entrance of the Scritch Scratch Supersud 9000 and doesn’t stop until we cut the power. Maybe that’s why half of our staff has been wearing earplugs and the rest we haven’t heard from in a few days…

As we near the end of Pet Poison Prevention Month, we'd like to pay attention to the most common toxicity cases that were called into the Pet Poison Helpline from Maine cat owners. The data in this graphic was compiled entirely from information directly from the Pet Poison Helpline from 2020-2024 (2025 data is not available yet).

The top 10 Cat Toxins for the State of Maine are:
☠ Lilies (lilium species)
☠ Anti-depressant/anxiety meds
☠ Bromethalin (found in rat poisons/rodenticides)
☠ Chocolate
☠ Essential oils
☠ Onions
☠ Day lilies (hemerocallis species)
☠ Ibuprofen (Advil)
☠ Allergy medications
☠ Flea and tick preventatives (particularly those labeled for dogs)

On top of the list (which doesn't surprise us at all) is lilies. We have posted information about lilies on this page every year in the spring because we can't stress enough how toxic lilies are to our feline friends. We usually see a few lily toxicity cases each year. Every part of the plant is toxic, from stem to stamen and everywhere in between. Even the water that lilies sit in can be toxic. If you have cats in your household, please do not bring lilies into your home unless you have an area that is entirely cat-free.

A few others we want to make note of since we have seen come through our doors are rodenticides and flea and tick preventatives. Did you know that rodenticides, or rat poisons, are not species specific? There is a common misconception that these products only target rats, mice, and other pests and it's just not true. Cats aren't usually ones to eat these products on their own like their canine counterparts are, but cats do eat rats, mice, and other small rodents that come in contact with or ingest these poisons. If a cat eats a mouse that has eaten rat poison, that poison is passed to the cat since these products are designed to be ingested. If you use any sort of rat poisons on your property, please keep this in mind especially if you have cats or cats nearby. (This can also be said for any wildlife, including birds of prey).

We have also seen several cases of well-meaning pet owners use canine flea and tick preventatives on their cats in an effort to save money, but also just entirely by mistake. Dogs and cats are similar in a lot of ways, but not in any way that would make flea and tick preventatives specifically labelled for dogs safe for cats. Even giving a smaller cat a flea and tick preventative intended for a larger cat can have consequences. These medications are formulated to be given to the correct species in a specific weight category and splitting or messing with the dosing information can cause deadly consequences. Toxicity cases for cats who have had too much or the wrong dose of flea and tick preventatives can develop uncontrollable tremors, seizures, or worse. Please only give the correct medication designed for cats, in the dose that is recommended. We also encourage pet owners to order flea and tick preventatives directly from your veterinarian or a trusted online pharmacy too.

If you suspect or can confirm that your cat has ingested any of these toxins, call a pet poison control helpline before calling us. These helplines are the experts in poison control and can quickly determine if veterinary care is needed, and if it is, come up with a game plan to help treat your pet. They know of any adverse reactions the toxin your pet ingested and the medications we give might have. They can determine if inducing vomiting would be beneficial or harmful. They can determine a lot of toxin-related things that your veterinary team might not have all the resources for (again, they're the experts)!
