What a day on today!!!
Received a call that I needed to come home to help with one of the animals. Star our Boer goat had a broken horn.
So I called 2 vets and everyone was swamped today. Tina was kind enough to give me some instructions and with Alora Martinez and Raul's help, I handled the problem after 2 visit to and .
Arrive home to adminster Banamine for pain, a tetanus shot, and then Raul hands me a razor blade and says cut the horn off. With a little back and forth of I can't do this you do it and I will hold her, he talked me into it.
Back story 18 years ago when I first moved to the farm, I couldn't handle anything, blood, needles, death, injuries. Crying and jumping around with fear was all I knew. Had a rule at my house with all the kids that came to visit no blood at Aunties. So if the task might cause injury don't do it here. Auntie doesn't do hospitals or blood.
Auntie does a lot now, including today cutting off the horn while apologizing for the pain. I think we did a really good job. I am proud of us both for getting through the ordeal.
Our first wrap job got the bleeding to stop but we soon figured we might have it to tight for her to breathe. So now that we felt confident that the bleeding was under control we put fresh medicine on the pad and re-wrapped it.
She is happier now and eating. Now I can add Dr. Doolittle to my resume of jobs.
Thank you to all that helped me today with text and phone calls to do home medicine. Will be keeping a close eye on her for any complications over the next 5 days.
Farm life gives you lots of lessons and definitely pushes you regularly out of your comfort zone. Today was one of those days.
