We recommend every pet be microchipped, even if they are strictly indoors and never leave the house. Accidents can happen at any time! They can become spooked and run out, you may need to evacuate during a hurricane and suddenly their carrier comes open and out they go, as well as many other possibilities.

June is National Microchipping Month 💉 We recommend ensuring your pet’s microchip information is current if they are microchipped. We can scan for the information if you don’t have it handy so you can make any changes you may need to. If your pet is not and you wish to get them microchipped, you can call to set up an appointment today!

Hurricane season begins June 1st 🌀 Be sure to include pets in your hurricane prep and planning!

We recommend having vaccine information handy, ensuring microchip information is up-to-date in the event that your pet gets lost and having extra medications, pet food as well as collars, leashes and kennels ready in your prep kit. Don’t wait til the last minute to pick up medications, as sometimes our clinic will close to allow our staff time to get home safely and prepare for the storm.

Please don’t leave your pet behind if you need to evacuate. Often times, shelters will allow pets with proper documentation.

If you have any questions, feel free to give us a call at 813-651-0467.

Summer is about to be in full force and it is already hot out there! Please remember while you’re out hiking a trail, walking your neighborhood, or strolling the sands, it’s hot for your dog, too!

Heat exhaustion in dogs can be an extremely emergent situation. We hear tragic stories about pets being left in poorly ventilated vehicles far too frequently, but your dog can also get overheated being left in a yard too long with inadequate shade or going on too vigorous a walk during the zenith of the day.

Stay on the lookout for:
- Excessive panting and drooling
- Dry or sticky gums
- Abnormal gum color or bruising in gums
- Lethargy
- Disorientation
- Seizures

In the event you suspect heat exhaustion in your pet, immediately find a cooler, shady place. Pour cool (not cold) water over your dog’s head and body and contact us (or an emergency clinic) ASAP!

As always, please reach out if you have any questions!

National Lyme Disease Awareness Month is observed in May and brings attention to how Lyme disease is contracted, ways to help prevent ticks and what signs to look for.

Lyme disease is a contracted from the deer tick or black-legged tick. Some areas have tick “seasons”, often beginning in May, but in Florida ticks are active year-round with peak season from March through October when it’s hottest.

Ticks love hanging out on the ends of grasses and bushes to find their host. Preventing ticks involves wearing long sleeves and pants to cover your skin and avoiding brush and resting near wooded areas. Wearing insect repellent with DEET properly is also a great way to help prevent ticks. If you go for walks or rest near wooded or scrubbed areas, be sure to check yourself and your pets for ticks after.

To remove a tick, use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to your skin as possible and pull up without twisting. Clean the area with soap and water. Signs to look for when questioning whether to seek medication attention after a tick bite include fever, chills, aches and pains and rashes. In dogs, you may notice lameness, swollen joints and lethargy.

If you think your dog may have a tick or Lyme disease, contact our office at 813-651-0467.

Pet insurance is becoming more common and there are many options available as far as coverage and cost are concerned.

Pet insurance typically involves owners paying out-of-pocket for cost of care and then they are reimbursed for whatever portion or services insurance will cover. There are a few companies, like Trupanion who will pay clinics directly for the portion they will cover up front and the owner will then pay the remaining balance.

For more information on how pet insurance works and the different coverages available, visit animalclinicofbrandon.com and select Pet Insurance from the Pet Health drop down menu.
