Huckleberry's Snack Shack

Huckleberry's Snack Shack I wanted to honor my perfect pit bull, Huckleberry, in the best way.

Huckleberry’s Snack Shack will temporarily feed local pets, allowing families to increase their ability to care for pets with the goal of keeping them out of shelters and with their families. He was an ambassador for the breed, exploding with an abundance of love, full of contagious playful energy that lived each moment fully.

Erin is a little more country than I am and that accent definitely gives her away. 😂 And I’m… let’s just say comfortable in just about any neighborhood. We’re different in a lot of ways, but we share the same values, the same passion for helping people and animals, and somehow we work really damn well together.

We’re loaded up and headed to Gary!

Send us some good travel juju, good vibes, and all the right energy for today. We’re hoping for a smooth trip, good weather, happy families and pets, good people, new connections, and whatever else the day has in store for us.

We’ve been getting A LOT done over here.

Yesterday, Hillary and Sherri came over to help me pack snack bags, and we knocked out 150 bags filled with some of the best snacks.

Dad came over today to help me organize and contain everything for tomorrow. After dinner, I packed another 48 bagged lunches with pulled pork sandwiches.

Tomorrow, it’s Erin and me from the Huckleberry’s Snack Shack crew heading to Gary. She’s bringing her truck so we can haul the toys, snack bags, lunches, and all the fuel for our volunteers; water, Gatorade, pop, cookies, donuts, jerky, sandwiches… basically enough food to keep everyone going. 😂

There’s something about the night before an outreach that I really love. The house is full of bags and boxes, my kitchen is a mess, and there are piles of stuff all over the garage that somehow need to make it into Erin’s truck tomorrow morning. It’s a lot of work, but it’s the kind of work I’m really grateful to get to do.

I really do have the best people around me. People who show up, roll up their sleeves, and help get s**t done. And taking care of people has always been what I do best. Give me a community that needs a little extra help, and I’m going to figure out how we can show up for them.

I love doing anything with Rescue Pack. They are my kind of people. And I’m really excited to finally meet the people behind Silverstray Social and work alongside them.

I’ve had the opportunity to help communities all over Chicago and the suburbs, the West Side, South Side, East Side, and everywhere in between. Something tells me the residents of Gary are going to become some of my favorites.

Tomorrow is going to be a good day.

Patty at The Home Depot always makes sure we’re taken care of before our community outreach events.

This time, she helped us with 100 bottles of dish soap to distribute tomorrow during our NWI storm relief event in Gary.

We’re so grateful for businesses and people like Patty who continue to show up for our community.

I first learned about Mac’s BBQ during the tornado relief efforts in Aroma Park. He took his love of BBQ and used it to feed his community. Night after night, he and his crew showed up for the residents impacted by the storm, serving up good food and a little bit of comfort when people needed it most.

Last week, I reached out to ask if he’d be interested in tagging along with us to feed the residents of Gary this Sunday. He politely declined, knowing his calendar was already booked, but generously offered to donate a pan of pulled pork for us to share.

And let me just tell you…as I was putting the tray away, I had to sneak a little taste. 😂 That BBQ sauce is DELICIOUS, and that pork is so tender.

We'll be serving pulled pork bagged lunches tomorrow. 🐖😋

When I thanked Marq Covton, he told me it really wasn’t necessary to give him a shoutout on Facebook.

Well…I'm going to do it anyway. 😉

Because good people deserve to be recognized.

If you haven't tried Mac’s BBQ yet, make sure you find him. Brisket, rib tips, catfish…there’s some seriously delicious food coming out of that truck.

Marques, it was so great meeting you.

Thank you kindly for doing the work you do and for helping us fill some bellies this Sunday. Me, along with everyone involved, appreciate you. 💚

Hey girl. Hey. ✨️

Project Provide and its founder, Allie.

Project Provide is a local nonprofit dedicated to helping families with basic needs while making sure kids still have opportunities to play, laugh, learn, and simply be kids. They provide things like toys, games, recreational gear, books, and other essentials to help fill the gaps that can become invisible barriers to a child’s confidence and growth.

After the devastating Aroma Park tornado, Allie and her friends showed up in a big way, rallying around families in their own community.

Earlier this week, Al Renae reached out to me and offered some of Project Provide’s abundance to help us with our storm relief efforts in Gary this Sunday. Because of their generosity, we’ll be able to share books, interactive toys, and several cases of water with families affected by the NWI storms and extended power outages.

There is something incredibly beautiful about organizations coming together with one shared purpose: to provide goodness to the people who need it most.

I am so fortunate to have incredible community resources who have my back and please know, I have yours, too. 💚

Please take a moment to give Project Provide a follow and support the amazing work Allie and her team are doing right here in our community. Their Facebook link is below. 👇

Thank you, Project Provide.

The August 11th storm hit Gary and Northwest Indiana HARD. Homes were damaged, neighborhoods flooded, and thousands of people were without power for days, some for nearly three weeks.

If you love animals, follow these organizations and support the work they’re doing;

🐾 Humane Society of Northwest Indiana
Their shelter was without normal power and they were operating on generators while continuing to care for the animals.

🐾 Silverstray Social
They continued helping keep pets with their families.

🐾 Humane Indiana
They faced flooding, rising water and a power outage, evacuated their shelter, and still took in more than 70 dogs from a hoarding case. Their Pet Food Pantry is also seeing increased demand from families affected by the storm.

🐾 Cause 4Paws Gary
Their pet food pantry continues helping local families feed and care for their pets. Their mobile unit was damaged during the storm, but they're still showing up for the community.

They were dealing with power outages, flooding, damage, unexpected expenses, exhausted teams and through it all, kept showing up.

Please follow them. 🐾

Let's support the people who are already on the ground doing the work.

I’ve updated our Amazon Wishlist to make it easier to support Huckleberry's Snack Shack and help provide for the residents we’ll be serving in NWI.

We don’t have much time to gather non-perishable goods, so if you’re ordering from our Amazon Wishlist, please make sure your items are scheduled to arrive by Saturday. We’ll be heading out early Sunday morning with everything we’ve collected.

We’re also collecting donations locally! Drop-off locations are listed below.

Thank you for jumping in and helping us pull this together!
