Breed In Sight🔍

-Let’s identify breed specific eye concerns-

Did you know that Basset Hounds are genetically predisposed to developing glaucoma? Glaucoma is a painful eye condition caused by increased pressure inside the eye. If left untreated, it can lead to blindness.

⚠️ Signs to watch for:
• Red or cloudy eyes
• Squinting or excessive tearing
• Bulging eye or vision changes
• Sensitivity to light

⏰ What to do:
Glaucoma is an emergency. If you notice symptoms, contact your vet immediately—early treatment can prolong your dog’s vision (and reduce pain).

❤️ Prevention tips:
• Regular eye exams especially for at-risk breeds
• Know your dog’s normal eye appearance

Eye spy with my little eye… some very good patients 👀🐾

Book their eye exam now! Because pets cannot communicate visual changes or discomfort, eye exams are critical for identifying progressive ocular conditions. Early care helps to minimize complications and support comfort. Help us ~Keep The Vision~😎

🥁Cool Cornea Corner 🥁

This series will showcase eye-catching corneal photography of patients seen by our ophthalmology department. Follow along for more!

Our first case reveals a cornea which had a severe corneal perforation, which is a full thickness wound through the surface of the eye. The perforation site has since healed with new cornea tissue filling in the wound bed. Although this cornea has extensive opacity due to edema (fluid buildup), fibrosis (scarring), and whorling pigment, the eye is comfortable and still maintains some vision. With aggressive medical management to promote healing, surgical eye removal was therefore avoided in this older patient ✅

🚨warning, may contain graphic content for some 🚨.

Today’s patient spotlight: Lola💕who came in with a bothersome eyelid mass causing irritation every time she blinked.
We performed the mass removal via a technique known as “debulking and cryotherapy” to protect her cornea, improve comfort, and keep her vision clear.

Cryotherapy involves applying extreme cold to the tissue where the mass was located, causing cellular destruction and reducing the likelihood for recurrence. This procedure is performed under sedation and local eyelid anesthesia, making it less invasive than a full thickness excision.

Note: most eyelid tumors in dogs are benign ✨

Lola did amazing for her procedure and is already feeling so much better! 💛👁️
