The Rule of 3: 3 Days, 3 Weeks, 3 Months
When Loki arrived at the shelter, he was just 3 years old.
He had been surrendered after a bite incident involving a family member. We don’t know every detail of what happened before that day, but we do know what happened next: his world changed overnight.
Look at the fear in his eyes in that shelter photo, taken about a week and a half after he arrived. Confused. Uncertain. Heartbroken. A dog trying to make sense of losing everything familiar.
Loki was one of the lucky ones. He didn’t spend months waiting. He was adopted quickly.
But adoption doesn’t instantly erase fear.
Three days into his new home, he still looked worried. He was safe, but he didn’t know it yet. The new sights, sounds, people, and routines were overwhelming. Even though he was loved, he was still wondering what would happen next.
That’s why the 3-3-3 Rule matters:
🐾 3 Days – Your new dog may be scared, shut down, anxious, or unsure. They’re simply trying to survive and figure out where they are.
🐾 3 Weeks – They begin settling into routines, learning who they can trust, and showing more of their personality.
🐾 3 Months – They finally start feeling at home. The walls come down. The real dog emerges.
Every shelter dog carries a story we may never fully know. Some arrive with fear in their eyes. Some arrive with baggage. All arrive needing patience.
Loki’s journey is a reminder that healing doesn’t happen overnight. It happens one day, one walk, one meal, and one act of trust at a time.
Sometimes the dog you meet on Day 3 is completely different from the dog you’ll know on Month 3.
And that’s the magic of giving them the time they deserve. ❤️🐾
