🐾 Tucker’s Incredible Comeback Story 🐾
Tucker, a 7-year-old neutered male Australian Shepherd, was brought to Bridger Emergency Department in late November 2025 for coughing and lethargy while visiting Montana with his family.
On presentation, Tucker had a dry cough and increased lung sounds. Chest radiographs revealed fluid in his lungs, which can be consistent with pneumonia or bleeding. Given his recent stay in an Airbnb, worsening symptoms, and lack of fever, our team pursued coagulation testing to rule out a bleeding disorder.
The results showed severely elevated clotting times, strongly suggesting anticoagulant rodenticide toxicity—a life-threatening condition causing internal bleeding.
Shortly after arrival, Tucker went into respiratory and cardiac arrest. Our ER team performed CPR and successfully resuscitated him. He was started immediately on:
-Plasma transfusions to replace clotting factors
-Vitamin K (the antidote to anticoagulant rodenticides)
-Oxygen therapy for his lungs
Despite these efforts, Tucker suffered brain damage due to low oxygen levels and blood loss. He began having seizures and was minimally responsive. To give him the best chance at recovery, he was:
-Placed on anti-seizure medications
-Supported with oxygen therapy
-Given a feeding tube
-Put into a medically induced coma to allow his brain time to heal
Over the next two weeks, Tucker slowly began to improve. The seizures stopped. He became more aware. He started eating on his own again. With support, he could move his legs and even begin walking using a wheelchair.
He was ultimately stable enough to go home to Minnesota with his family for continued care.
❤️ And this is where the story gets even better…
By Christmas, Tucker was:
-Walking unassisted
-Interacting with his family again
-Reconnecting with his devoted dog sister, Maggie (who never left his side!)
Today, Tucker is living life to the fullest—running, hiking in the woods, enjoying good food, and spending time with the people (and pup) who love him most.
✨ Tucker’s journey is a powerful reminder of the brain’s incredible ability to heal when given time, support, and care.
We are so grateful to have been part of his story. 💙🐶
