Two people meet. They fall in love...and so it begins.
Pack Ponderosa hasn’t “always been” like a lot of cattle ranchers’ and livestock breeders’ stories you hear so often. Pack Ponderosa was built on a foundation of love and hard work, but didn’t make it’s grand debut until 2012., twenty years later.
Pack Ponderosa Show Cattle began in 2011. Our daughter, Madelaine, expressed her desire to show livestock. We thought we would give it a try but we never dreamed it would be what it is today. Here is the turning point of our story and really where our success all began. In preparation for Madelaine’s Senior Year show year we made arrangements for the family to attend the 2012 JLS International Sale in May that included their fall offering of show heifer prospects. With many hours spent studying EPDs, sale lot videos, and discussing what would be the best buy for our program Madelaine had made a decision on what she wanted. Mind you, this was for her senior year of high school was 2012-2013, so the purchase that was made was to be her last project as a Junior member. With anticipation of the sale beginning, she and her daddy (Johnny) took one last walk through the pins. With exhilaration, she pulled him aside to share with him her final decision (because you can only have one favorite, right?) He informed her that Lot 7 was probably out of our price range and that she should pick one more lot ‘just in case’. As a young girl with tears in her eyes she looked up and said this famous line, “Daddy, just get stupid!” Needless to say Lot 7 was ours and with pure excitement we headed home not knowing what amount of joy she would bring us. All heifers have a personality, and our Ellie, was that (and still is) a true champion with her devotion and dedication. Her spirit, desire and willingness only exhilarated you to do more, excel more. Exiting any show ring, you knew, she gave all she had, just for you. Ellie will remain a part of our family and her duties now include eating everything in sight and being a top producing donor cow. There was a slight break in our cattle showing experience due to numerous bulls being born to our show team. With each of using our talents and expertise in our show program, Johnny, with his fervent desire to study and determination of owning quality genetics, made the decision to breed Ellie with Dougets Hercules 88S3. That breeding decision resulted in our show program re-taking off with the birth of our very first show heifer, who is now next donor cow, Jade. Jade quickly exceeded all of our expectations with her phenotype and excellence in the show ring beginning as a young heifer calf, through her award of Grand Champion Cow Calf Pair at the recent National Junior Brangus Show and also the Grand Champion Cow Calf Pair at the Brangus Futurity in Texarkana. In Spring of 2016, we had the need to purchase an additional show heifer for our Show Team because of the aging out of a show heifer, and more bull calves being born. We made the decision to call on our very first breeder, Ricky and Rhonda Johnston of Johnston Cattle Company, in Waxahachie, Texas for a show heifer prospect for our show team. We knew instantly when we saw “Ruby Lee” that she was the one. Ruby Lee along with Jade, has continued to exceed all of our expectations in the show ring. At Fort Worth Regional Show, she won Grand Champion Brangus Female and continued her winning of Champion Calf at Fort Worth Stock Show, and the San Antonio Livestock Show and won Reserve Grand Champion at San Angelo in the Junior Program. In Texarkana, Ruby Lee was the Reserve Champion Yearling Heifer at the National Junior Brangus Show and Grand Champion Female at the Brangus Futurity. We are excited for Ruby Lee to continue in her Dam’s footsteps. DDD Ms Tonto 209P2 was the 2006 National Junior Brangus Show Grand Champion Female. 915 and 209 are CHAMPION bloodlines that Pack Ponderosa is proud to have in our herd.
