Protein % in your feed doesn’t really matter!!!

For every 2% increase in protein, total grams of protein only increase by about 10g per pound.

For simplicity sake let’s say we have a horse who requires a minimum of 700 grams of protein per day. If eating 6lbs/day of a 12% protein feed, it will provide 326g of protein. If eating 6lbs/day of a 14% protein, 381g of protein. 55g difference in 6lbs of feed.

To put this into perspective- if that horse is eating 20lbs/day of an 8% protein hay, the forage alone will provide 726g of protein. Maybe it’s 18% straight alfalfa. 20lbs/day at 18% = 1,634g of protein (in a 700g min requirement).

While this doesn’t take into consideration the digestibility or amino acid content of that hay, if feeding decent quality forage, it alone should be satisfying protein needs, and a 2 or even 4% change in percent protein in your feed doesn’t make a huge impact on the total diet.

*Edit- this ONLY refers to protein. No forage alone will provide the appropriate vitamin/minerals needed for a working or breeding horse.

The top 10 in each event get invited to the FWSSR scholarship rodeo.

Y’all help me congratulate these 3 kids on making it!!!

We are so proud of them.

If you are at the FWSSR on Feb 8 then be sure to go watch them. If not then make plans to be there.

Choosing a horse that will be the right fit for your child when they're first starting out can make or break the experience for them. The horse can be the difference between a lifelong rider or losing the interest of a potential horseman. Take the time to find the right fit and make the experience enjoyable for your kids.
