After we did the herding clinic in Maine, I went back to NY and did a lot of mixed flock work, farm work, and arena cattle work with Fiddle, Mazikeen, and Chunky, with some with little Miss Rory. We also did some foundations and fundamentals with Sue on both sheep and cattle in the small and super small pens. The weather was overcast and cool, and I think we made a lot of good progress. I can't wait to get back here in July

We did a quick turnaround to go up to Maine for another Jan clinic. This group had been inviting me up for years, and this is the first time that I could take them up on it. The weather was TERRIBLE, like 40 degrees and raining, so we moved to an inside setup in Searsport! This was the finest setup I have been in for introductory work in my young dogs....

It is time again for the Jan Wesen clinic! It was at Cherry Hill Farm in Honeyone Falls, NY. On the first day of the clinic, I worked Sue, Rory, Chunky, and Mazikeen on the fundamental steps. And then the next two days, I worked Rory, Chunky, Mazikeen, and Fiddle interchangeably (depending on the exercises and skills). I created a schematic of my favorite skill that we worked on (with Chunky, Mazikeen, and Fiddle)....

One of the things that I really need to be successful is just having the time to work my dogs on stock, especially cattle. Getting security moving stock away from me, holding pressure and gathering the stock up the middle of the field. I had the Fiddle crew with me (Fiddle, Mazikeen, Chunky, Rory, Sue), and we spent time working on important fundamental skills with our friend Anya....

Well, we did not have any luck at Bucks and Trenton. I showed Rory on Saturday, and Mazikeen on Sunday, and opted to skip out on Monday to go work cows! After the short trip to Bear, DE, we went to Berryville, VA, for the one day Bernese Mountain Dog of America National Specialty Trial. There were two sheep only trials in one day, and I brought Mazikeen and Fiddle to work! So, trying to chase that last major, we made a pit stop in Bear Delaware on Saturday for the Wilmington Kennel Club show! And Chunky did not disappoint, winning Best Opposite and picking up her last major (4 points) needed for her grand! Now we need 5 more points (and a chance to single out) to finish! 04/26/25 JUDGE: Dr. Albert P. Bianchi Chunky - BOS/OHBOB - 4 Points

We dipped out of Harrisburg early so I could go to a Tracking seminar with Sam Adams and Mazikeen in the West Virginia Mountains. It was so much fun! I learned about scent pads, and how to get diverse experiences working their nose for treats in all sorts of locations. We did some short tracks in a straight line, then added corners, and learned about articles....

I have worked with a lot of clinicians in the past, and some of these lessons are starting to sink into my skull. I am becoming much calmer in handling cattle and my dogs, however, I am still sort of in the way. So the entire goal of this clinic was to be far enough off the stock to give my dogs confidence in their driving and fetching, while I was out of the way (in the middle of the field)....
