Ira Wallace Seed School has been a pure pleasure to be in.

As a budding seed saver I didn't realize how deep this work is until I began my courses.

I'm so blessed to know loving individuals.

One of our longtime football moms came through with wheelbarrows, shovels and rakes.

Another adult came to learn and assist and 1 out of 4 seniors that signed up showed up and helped with the heavy lifting.

We were able to get all the beds filled with straw as the filler. One bed fully ready to plant, 1 almost ready and 3 still need 50% completion.

We got our earthly sweat equity in today. I hit over 11k steps by 1:30pm ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ

I'm thankful for the community that showed up, assisted and learned how to prepare raised beds using organic matter along the way.

๐ŸŒฑ They got to go home with spinach, collards and crimson clover seedlings.

Super thankful for Michelle for providing the additional tools needed for today.

Jarrahdale pumpkins are considered excellent for eating, prized for their sweet, nutty, and creamy flesh that is delicious when roasted, purรฉed, or used in pies, soups, stews, and breads.

They have a dense, fine texture that caramelizes well when cooked and a flavor profile similar to butternut squash or sweet potatoes.

Flavor and Texture

Sweet and Nutty: The Jarrahdale pumpkin has a rich, nutty sweetness.

Creamy and Fine: Its flesh is fine-textured, dense, and creamy, making it smooth and melt-in-your-mouth after roasting.

Versatile: It holds up well to various cooking methods and can be used in both sweet and savory dishes.

Uses

Roasting: Roasting caramelizes its natural sugars, creating a rich, concentrated flavor.

Pies and Baking: Its smooth, creamy texture makes it perfect for pies, muffins, bread, and other baked goods.

Soups and Stews: The flesh can be purรฉed for silky-smooth soups and stews.

Savory Dishes: It's also excellent with meats, vegetables, and in risottos.

Tips for Enjoying Jarrahdale Pumpkins

Roast for Best Flavor: Roasting is a highly recommended way to cook Jarrahdale pumpkins to enhance their sweetness and nutty notes.

Simple Preparations: Some find the pumpkin so flavorful that it can be eaten simply with butter and honey.

Store Well: Jarrahdales are an heirloom variety that stores well for an extended period.

We have 1 available I'm keeping the other for recipes at home.

I harvested our 1st fruit of the season!

I planted a mixed variety this year that was said to be resistant to pests. Last year those gladiator pumpkins took me for a run digging out squash borers and taping where I dug them out at.

So this year I have a beautiful mix of fruit growing and this Jarrahdale is my 1st autumn fruit harvest!

I also harvested a decent amount of butternut squash. Think I'm gonna try a butternut soup this year. has an absolutely delicious soup recipe in her cookbook that needs to be explored.

Does anyone have a recipe to share for these Jarrahdales?

Jarrahdale pumpkins are a variety of winter squash known for their distinct slate-blue or grey-green color and deep ribs. This heirloom pumpkin, also referred to as a "blue pumpkin," is a cross between the Blue Hubbard and Cinderella pumpkin and is often grown for both decoration and culinary use. It has a hard shell, a thick, sweet orange flesh, and a flavor profile that is described as being similar to a sweet potato.
