🦇 BAT ACTIVITY INCREASING IN KANKAKEE COUNTY

We have seen an increase in bat-related incidents throughout Kankakee County, and we want to remind Momence residents to take a few simple precautions to protect themselves, their families, and their pets.

Rabies is a serious and potentially fatal disease, and bats are a known carrier. Most bats are harmless and play an important role in our ecosystem—but they should never be handled.

If you encounter a bat:

• 🦇 Do NOT touch or attempt to pick up a bat, even if it appears injured, sick, or unable to fly.

• 🏠 If a bat gets inside your home, keep people and pets away from it and contact local animal control or the appropriate authorities for assistance. Do not attempt to handle or remove it yourself.

• 🐶 Keep pets current on their rabies vaccinations. Even indoor pets can potentially be exposed if a bat gets inside your home.

• ⚠️ If you or a pet may have had contact with a bat, do not assume there was no exposure simply because you cannot see a bite. Contact the Kankakee County Health Department or your veterinarian for guidance.

• 🧼 If you are bitten or scratched, or if bat saliva may have come into contact with an open wound, eyes, nose, or mouth, immediately wash the area thoroughly with soap and water and seek medical attention.

• 👶 Pay special attention when a bat is found in a room where someone was sleeping, particularly if a child or anyone who may not be able to recognize or report a bite was present.

Please don’t panic if you see a bat outdoors—seeing bats outside is normal. The important thing is to keep your distance and never handle one.

Help us keep Momence safe: observe from a distance, protect your pets, and contact the appropriate authorities if you believe there has been an exposure. 🦇

Construction on our front deck begins this afternoon! 🛠️ We’re excited to get things underway, but there may be some extra activity and no access to the front entrance.
