There's nothing better than cooling off in the nice cool river or creek during a hot summer day! However, it's important to understand some risks so swimming stays fun for all! π
Here's some helpful reminders:
β Get your pup a snug life jacket π
βͺ Even if the water is shallow, there's no guarantee that your dog won't struggle. Make sure to bring a sturdy life jacket, especially if they're playing in deeper waters
β Bring fresh water for your dog to drink β²
βͺ Lakes, rivers, and creeks are known to have icky bacteria and chemicals in them. Help your dog stay healthy by providing clean water for them to drink and try to avoid having them drink too much of the lake/river water
β Be Aware of Fishing Areas π£
βͺ It can be difficult to see fishing lines that could entangle your pet and stray fishing hooks can puncture their skin. Keep curious pets away from the tackle box, as bait can be a tempting snack, and small fishing gear can be intriguing for dogs who like to chew. Swallowing these small items could lead to a gastrointestinal blockage
β Bring Pet Formulated Sun Screen βοΈ
βͺ Dogs can get sunburned, too! Make sure to protect your pet from the sun's rays, especially if they are hairless or thinner-haired
β Rinse your Pet Off After Swimming πΏ
βͺ Once you wrap up your water adventure, rinse your pet off to remove any pool chemicals, salt water, or sand/rock, which can irritate their skin. Be extra sure to dry their ears too. Water in the ears is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria, which can lead to ear infections
β Have Fun! πΆ
βͺAnd of course, have fun! With any adventure or activity, there will be risks. As long as you are aware and know what to do to avoid negative experiences, each time will be a great time!
