This was not sent to me, but been seeing posts all over fb. So want to share with everyone so you can be aware. Stay away from dog populated areas... take your shoes off at the door... anything to save a huge vet bill and keep your pups happy and healthy 🩷
I just wanted to share an email I received from our vet today alerting everyone to an illness in dogs to watch out for in Bozeman!
"Dear Clients,
We want to let you know about a recent case of a very serious respiratory illness in a local dog that was seen at Bridger Veterinary Specialists (BVS). The dog had been staying at a local boarding facility and became suddenly ill. Despite quick and aggressive treatment, the dog sadly passed away within hours.
Testing confirmed the illness was caused by Streptococcus zooepidemicus, a bacteria that can lead to severe lung infections in dogs. The boarding facility involved is contacting all dog owners whose pets may have been there at the same time.
While we don’t know how much contact other dogs may have had with the sick dog, we want to make sure you’re informed and watching for signs.
Please call us right away if your dog shows any of the following symptoms:
Sneezing
Runny nose
Coughing (especially if coughing up blood)
Trouble breathing
Lethargy or weakness
Vomiting
Fever
This type of infection can progress quickly, so don’t wait to call if you notice anything unusual.
There is no vaccine available for this bacteria, and dogs can carry it without showing signs. If your dog was recently boarded or around other dogs and you're concerned, we’re here to help you decide what steps to take."
