Hey everyone!

We just wanted to give you a quick Nala update!

Tasha had a personal trip planned for a few months. With Nala coming in and being so urgent, she was going to cancel her trip.

Reacue doesn’t stop and personal time is far and in-between. More often than not we put the animals first, putting ourselves our mental health and our families second. We justify it by telling ourselves we can save this animals’s life now and we can always take a trip later, but the problem is sometimes it’s years before later actually comes.

Knowing this all too well, our friends at
Turtle Mountain Animal Rescue stepped up and offered to watch over and care for Nala so Tasha could take a very rare break in full confidence.

Tasha got some R&R in the black hills over the weekend and will be picking our girl up this evening. She is doing well.

Thank you to TMAR for stepping up! We are all in this together and having people to depend on really makes or breaks our spirits sometimes.

Here are some photos from the weekend and a Nala update will come tonight or tomorrow!

Nala Has Been Discharged!

This morning was a very special one. Nala was discharged from the veterinary hospital and received a sweet sendoff filled with pets, well wishes, and heartfelt prayers from the staff who have worked so hard to care for her.

Nala still has her drain tube in place, but we are hopeful it will be able to be removed tomorrow if everything continues to heal as expected.

She has been sitting herself up quite often today and seemed especially excited to look out the car windows during the ride home. It was wonderful to see a little bit of her personality shining through after everything she has been through.

For now, Nala is resting comfortably in Tasha’s kitchen, which has been transformed into the cleanest and most sterile environment possible. Because of the severity of her injuries and surgeries, she will remain at a high risk for infection for some time, so keeping her recovery area clean and quiet is incredibly important.

While we are encouraged by her progress, we do have some concerns about the muscles in Nala’s remaining hind leg. We have noticed that she occasionally folds her toes underneath rather than placing her foot flat on her paw pads. This could indicate some muscle weakness, strain, or nerve involvement. However, she is still very fresh out of surgery, and it is also possible that her body simply needs more time to recover before we know exactly what her long-term function will look like.

Nala’s journey is far from over. She will need continued rest, physical therapy, antibiotics, pain management, and lots of patience as her body heals and adapts.

For now, we are celebrating another milestone. She is home, she is comfortable, and she continues to show us every day just how strong she is.

Thank you all for the prayers, support, donations, messages, and encouragement. We truly could not do this without you. Please continue to keep Nala in your thoughts as she takes the next steps in her recovery. ❤️

Look who is getting some fresh air!

Nala has been enjoying some time outside and has periodically been able to sit up while supporting her own weight, which is very encouraging to see.

She hasn’t quite figured out how to put weight on her remaining back leg and walk yet, so for now she is being assisted with a sling under her hips to help support her while moving around.

She still has a drain tube in her front leg, which we are hopeful can be removed tomorrow morning if everything continues to progress as expected.

We are still watching her front leg very closely. There is a possibility that Nala may need an additional surgery, depending on how the muscle responds over the next several days. With injuries of this severity, it can take time for damaged tissue to fully declare itself. If not enough of the dead tissue was removed during the initial surgery, or if any of the tissue that currently appears healthy loses viability, additional surgical intervention may be necessary.

For now, we continue to take things one day at a time. Nala is receiving excellent care, staying comfortable, and showing us every day that she is willing to keep fighting.

Thank you all for the continued prayers, support, and encouragement. Every message, share, and donation helps us give Nala the best chance possible. ❤️

Nala Update

Our girl is stable.

The surgery to amputate her back leg was successful, and she is currently resting peacefully while heavily medicated and receiving around-the-clock care.

I had the opportunity to visit her today and give her some pets. Despite everything she has been through, she lifted her head and wagged her tail when she heard my voice. It was a small moment, but one that gave all of us a little extra hope.

I will be stopping by again this evening to check on her and spend some more time with her.

While today’s surgery was an important step forward, Nala is still not out of the woods. She has significant trauma to her front leg, and now that she has lost her back leg, her recovery will depend heavily on her ability to heal and eventually support her weight on three legs.

She also remains at high risk for infection. The damaged muscle in her front leg needs to stay healthy and continue healing so that the front of her body can safely bear the additional weight required for mobility moving forward.

Beyond her physical injuries, Nala has endured an incredible amount of mental and emotional trauma. Despite everything she has been through, she continues to show a gentle spirit and seems to be in remarkably good spirits considering the circumstances.

Right now, Nala is exactly where she needs to be. She is receiving the best care possible from an amazing veterinary team and, so far, is responding as well as we could reasonably hope for. She will continue to be closely monitored throughout the evening, and we are taking her recovery one day, one hour, and one step at a time.

Thank you to everyone who has donated, shared her story, sent prayers, and kept Nala in your thoughts. Your support means more than you know.

Tonight, we celebrate a small victory and remain hopeful for what tomorrow may bring. ❤️

NALA UPDATE

Nala is currently stable, hospitalized, and receiving around-the-clock care. She remains on IV fluids and pain medication while her veterinary team closely monitors her condition.

Yesterday, all five of Nala’s gunshot wounds were surgically cleaned and closed with stitches. A drain tube was placed in the first of the five wounds to help reduce fluid buildup and support healing.

With traumatic injuries like these, it often takes time for damaged tissue and skin to “declare itself,” meaning veterinarians must wait to see which areas will recover and which may not survive. Because Nala went more than 24 hours after being shot before receiving emergency veterinary care, some of the damaged muscle tissue had already become necrotic and needed to be surgically removed.

The veterinary staff shared that it is nothing short of a miracle that Nala was able to support her own weight at all. The bullet that entered her body essentially sliced through the bicep muscle in her front leg and shattered the femur in her back leg on the same side of her body.

Right now, the focus is on monitoring how her wounds heal and determining whether her front leg will recover enough function and strength to support her long-term. This will be especially important when the time comes for the amputation of her shattered back leg.

As we move forward, we are taking all factors into consideration and carefully evaluating what is truly in Nala’s best interest. At this time, she remains under constant veterinary supervision, where she is being closely monitored and kept as comfortable as possible with pain medication and supportive care.

The coming days will tell us a great deal about how her body responds to these injuries and what her chances are for a meaningful recovery. Our goal is to give Nala every reasonable opportunity to heal and fight for the life she deserves, while also being mindful of her comfort and quality of life throughout this process.

We know everyone is rooting for Nala, and so are we. But our responsibility is to make decisions based on what is best for her, not just what we hope for. We will continue to listen to our veterinary team, monitor her progress closely, and weigh every option carefully. Above all else, we are committed to ensuring that our efforts help Nala, not harm her. We will not prolong suffering or pursue treatment that causes more harm than good.

Nala still has a long road ahead of her, but she is fighting. We are incredibly grateful to the veterinary team working tirelessly to give her the best possible chance, and we are thankful for every person who has reached out, donated, shared her story, and kept her in their thoughts.

Please continue to keep Nala in your prayers, positive thoughts, and well wishes as she begins the next stage of her recovery. Every comment, message of support and donation reminds us that she is not fighting this battle alone.

GRAPHIC PHOTO WARNING!

Dog with gun shot wounds!!

*************************************

Nala was shot yesterday.

Without access to help, she laid under the kitchen table overnight bleeding.

When I got the call about a gunshot wound dog, I was only a few minutes away from the area, already headed that direction.

When I got the photo, I instantly knew it was Nala. A dog I had been dropping food off to her owners for two years now. A dog who was alway happy to see me, always one of the first ones to my trailer waiting for a treat, and always friendly.

I knew exactly where she lived and raced over there, but even then I wasn’t prepared for what I walked into.

Nala was hit by a single bullet THREE times. It went into her front leg, exiting, continued down her side tearing a 3 by 3 inch wound into her flesh before entering her hind leg and shattering her femur before exiting completely. It also severed an artery, leaving her actively bleeding.

It’s a miracle she hadn’t already bled to death by the time I got there.

I had four kids, another dog and a cat in my vehicle already and was hauling a trailer full of dog food… and had to start unloading bags of food to make room for a big, injured, sprawled out dog who was actively bleeding.

As soon as I got Nala loaded, I called to have Rural Area Veterinary Services ready and left to get here there as quickly as I could.

The Veterinary staff was amazing. They were waiting ready outside and as soon as I was in park it was go time getting Nala in on a table and starting work to try and get her medically stable.

They tied off the artery, removed bone fragments, cleaned, closed and dressed her wounds, gave her liquids and pain medication and now is the hard part… we wait.

-Nala lost ALOT of blood.
-We need to make sure she is stable enough to survive surgery.
-Both her front and back leg were injured, they have to make sure the injury to her front let will heal enough to support her body if they amputate her back leg, which can’t be saved.

So she will be hospitalized, surrounded by veterinarians and monitored for now.

If Nala survives, she will have three legs. She will be at high risk for infection, while she heals. She will have an extensive recovery period as she learns how to support herself on three legs.

Nala needs our help. Her recovery care is going to be long and expensive.

***YES, law enforcement is involved and this shooting is under investigation***
