NALA UPDATE
Nala is currently stable, hospitalized, and receiving around-the-clock care. She remains on IV fluids and pain medication while her veterinary team closely monitors her condition.
Yesterday, all five of Nala’s gunshot wounds were surgically cleaned and closed with stitches. A drain tube was placed in the first of the five wounds to help reduce fluid buildup and support healing.
With traumatic injuries like these, it often takes time for damaged tissue and skin to “declare itself,” meaning veterinarians must wait to see which areas will recover and which may not survive. Because Nala went more than 24 hours after being shot before receiving emergency veterinary care, some of the damaged muscle tissue had already become necrotic and needed to be surgically removed.
The veterinary staff shared that it is nothing short of a miracle that Nala was able to support her own weight at all. The bullet that entered her body essentially sliced through the bicep muscle in her front leg and shattered the femur in her back leg on the same side of her body.
Right now, the focus is on monitoring how her wounds heal and determining whether her front leg will recover enough function and strength to support her long-term. This will be especially important when the time comes for the amputation of her shattered back leg.
As we move forward, we are taking all factors into consideration and carefully evaluating what is truly in Nala’s best interest. At this time, she remains under constant veterinary supervision, where she is being closely monitored and kept as comfortable as possible with pain medication and supportive care.
The coming days will tell us a great deal about how her body responds to these injuries and what her chances are for a meaningful recovery. Our goal is to give Nala every reasonable opportunity to heal and fight for the life she deserves, while also being mindful of her comfort and quality of life throughout this process.
We know everyone is rooting for Nala, and so are we. But our responsibility is to make decisions based on what is best for her, not just what we hope for. We will continue to listen to our veterinary team, monitor her progress closely, and weigh every option carefully. Above all else, we are committed to ensuring that our efforts help Nala, not harm her. We will not prolong suffering or pursue treatment that causes more harm than good.
Nala still has a long road ahead of her, but she is fighting. We are incredibly grateful to the veterinary team working tirelessly to give her the best possible chance, and we are thankful for every person who has reached out, donated, shared her story, and kept her in their thoughts.
Please continue to keep Nala in your prayers, positive thoughts, and well wishes as she begins the next stage of her recovery. Every comment, message of support and donation reminds us that she is not fighting this battle alone.
