🏀 From the Court to K9 Training 🐾

This week was an exciting week for Off Leash K9 Training Northeast! We had the opportunity to wrap up an incredible training experience with Donavan “Donnie” Freeman, power forward for St. John’s Men’s Basketball, and his family as his pups, Pluto & Dior, completed their Three Week Board & Train with our trainer LiAndra of NY Metro Off Leash K9 Training! 🏀🐾

Pluto & Dior came to us at two very different stages of life and training.

🐾 Pluto, a young Rottweiler, already had a great foundation. His family wanted to strengthen his off-leash reliability, heel and leash discipline, address jumping, and continue building advanced obedience as he matures.

🐾 Dior, a 6-year-old Goldendoodle, came in needing additional structure, stronger obedience and leash manners, improved off-leash reliability, and clearer boundaries around behaviors like getting on furniture.

Throughout their stay, LiAndra worked diligently with both dogs through our balanced training curriculum—combining clear communication, positive reinforcement, praise, play, structure, and accountability. They worked through our core commands: Come, Sit, Down, Place, Heel, Break & Off, while building the confidence and reliability needed for everyday life. 💪🐕

One of the most important parts of any Board & Train is the turnover. We had the opportunity to work hands-on with Donnie’s family, including his sister D’Nia, as LiAndra walked them through the curriculum, equipment, commands, timing, and techniques they’ll use to continue reinforcing everything Pluto & Dior learned at home.

Training doesn’t end when a dog leaves our care. The turnover gives the family the tools and knowledge to turn those new skills into lasting habits. ❤️

Kova recently completed our 8-Week Behavior Modification Program with trainer Nataleigh, and we’re so happy to hear how positive their experience was!

Behavior modification isn’t about expecting a dog to change overnight—it’s about building better communication, creating clearer expectations, working through challenging behaviors, and giving owners the knowledge and tools to continue making progress long after their lessons are complete.

🏀🐾 Meet Pluto & Dior!

You may recognize the name behind these two! Pluto the Rottweiler and Dior the Doodle belong to Donavan “Donnie” Freeman, St. John’s basketball power forward and former Syracuse standout! ❤️🏀

Pluto and Dior have been spending the last few weeks with our trainer LiAndra as they work their way through our Three Week Board & Train Program!

Throughout their time with LiAndra, these two have been working on building stronger obedience, confidence, impulse control, better communication, and reliable manners around real-world distractions. The Three Week Program gives us additional time to work through each dog's individual needs while continuing to challenge them in different environments and situations.

Just like on the court, consistency, communication, and putting in the work make all the difference. 💪🐾

We’ve loved having Pluto & Dior with us and can’t wait to show you more of what these two have been working on with LiAndra!

🐾 MEET ROCKY! 🐾

Say hello to Rocky, an adorable 4-year-old Chihuahua, Shih Tzu, Miniature Pinscher, Pekingese & Dachshund mix who is joining us for his Two Week Board & Train! 🎓🐶

Rocky is also deaf, so his training will be tailored to help create clear, consistent communication while building his confidence and reliability. 💙

During his two weeks with us, we’ll be focusing on:

🐕 Reactivity when seeing other dogs
👋 Staying calm around new people
🐾 Reducing jumping when greeting guests or getting excited
🏡 Building confidence and independence to help with separation anxiety
🌎 Developing a calmer, more manageable demeanor in public spaces
🎓 Building a strong foundation of reliable obedience and communication

Marcello is a 1-year-old Frenchie here for his Two Week Board & Train with trainer Chalanda! 💙

This handsome little guy is here to work on some of those big puppy behaviors, including jumping on everyone, barking at just about everything, and chewing things he shouldn’t. His family’s goal is simple: a happier, more well-behaved pup with better manners and reliable obedience!

Throughout his two weeks with Chalanda, Marcello is working on Come, Sit, Down, Place, Heel, Off, proper greeting manners, impulse control, and overall reliability around distractions. He’ll also be building the structure and consistency needed to make those good choices carry over into everyday life.

Marcello has been putting in the work, and we’re excited to see his progress! 🐶🎓

Your dog isn't born confident—they become confident through experience.

It's natural to want to protect our dogs from things that make them nervous or uncomfortable. But when we avoid every challenge, we also take away their opportunity to learn that they can handle it.

Whether it's walking past another dog, meeting new people, learning to ignore distractions, or simply exploring a new environment, confidence is built one successful experience at a time.

Training isn't about forcing your dog into uncomfortable situations—it's about giving them the guidance, structure, and support to work through them safely.

Every confident dog was once a dog learning something new. ❤️🐶

🚨 AIR QUALITY ALERT FOR THE NORTHEAST 🚨

With wildfire smoke and elevated pollution levels affecting much of the Northeast, it’s important to remember that poor air quality doesn’t just impact us, it affects our dogs too.

Dogs breathe faster than we do, spend more time with their noses close to the ground where pollutants settle, and many can’t tell us when they’re struggling. Puppies, senior dogs, flat-faced breeds, and dogs with heart or respiratory conditions are especially vulnerable.

🐾 Here are a few simple ways to keep your pup safe:
• Check your local Air Quality Index (AQI) before heading outside.
• Keep walks shorter and avoid strenuous exercise when air quality is poor.
• Walk earlier in the morning or later in the evening when conditions may be better.
• Bring fresh water on walks and keep your dog well hydrated.
• Wipe your dog’s paws and coat after being outdoors to remove ash and pollutants.
• Watch for coughing, excessive panting, watery eyes, nasal discharge, lethargy, or difficulty breathing. If you notice any of these signs, contact your veterinarian promptly.

Remember, mental exercise can be just as tiring as physical exercise! On poor air quality days, consider working on obedience commands, place training, scent games, food puzzles, or trick training indoors instead of taking a long walk.
